Hi all
I recently purchased a new DuoMobil 534 . Travelworld supplied and fitted the Radio / Sat Nav unit. ( Blaupunkt New York 830) .
I was really disappointed to find out afterwards that the steering wheel controls are not functional. Travelworld tell me that the necessary wiring has been disabled by Hymer and that I'd have the same problem with any head unit. Can this be true ? It seems like a very backward step to me... to advertise steering wheel controls and then to disable them on some models. On talking with a third party who fitted my alarm and tracker i was told that that wasn't the case and that the head unit is very low specification and needs an adapter to enable it to be connected to steering wheel controls but this adapter is no longer available. Can anyone throw any light on this situation, does anyone have a recent Hymer where the fingertip audio controls work and if so with what head unit ?

This link seems to suggest an adapter is needed if you want to enable the steering wheel controls, so it’s maybe not so much that Hymer have “disabled” them, more that they need to be actively “enabled” by means of an adaptor. ..

Edit - we have the Zenec unit fitted in the front of our 534 and this can be controlled via steering wheel buttons. It was however a factory fitted option.

Try contacting someone like InCarTec https://incartec.co.uk/home and having a chat with them, they should be able to supply the correct cable to match the Fiat steering wheel controls to the Blaupunkt head unit, it may need a CANbus lead which does need to be fairly specific. They were very good at sorting the correct lead for my car which had a non standard head unit fitted.

Thanks for your reply SteveJ , Just out of interest do you have any problem putting you drop down bed up and down and can you store bedding on it ours is very stiff to lift up or pull down and can only store a very thin duvet. Also where do you store the bed ladder.

The steering wheel controls are an option, why would Hymer supply an expensive option that doesn't work, Travelworld BS.
If the parts they need are obsolete it is down to them to replace it with a current unit. I expect they charged you well over the odds for it and if they have supplied an obsolete unit that is sharp practice.

Car Audio Warehouse will probably have the part you need but its not up to you Travelwold should be sorting it.
If you are happy with the unit and the price you paid and you can get the loom ask Travelworld for a refund on the amount you paid for the steering wheel as it is not standard on Hymers.

It should be easy to get a loom as I expect there is one loom that fits all Blaupunkt / Fiat steering wheels but it does appear they have sold you an obsolete stereo unit.

Thanks for your reply Lenny , they told me it was an upgrade from what they were going to fit and yes they did charge over the odds it was part of the "deal" when trading in my older motorhome (2015).

Sorry but I don't have the same MH as you and don't have a drop down bed in mine so can't help you with that. Might be worth posting that as a question in the Hymer sub forum, I am sure there will be a number of others who can help you with that.

We have fitted loads of Dometic Blaupunkt head units, mainly the discontinued Columbia units. The steering wheel controls could be connected via an after market interface, but frankly it didn't work well and had to be set to each individual chassis.

Being primarily designed as a delivery van the Merc and Fiat chassis weren't intended to have expensive aftermarket head units installed so the number of functions that the "interface" recognised were limited

From memory you could change the volume and tracks and that was it so it wasn't deemed worth it.

EDIT: The current units are the Atlantis and Palm Beach, and I believe that the Atlantis is designed for the X250 and is SWC compatible

We've stopped selling all of the Blaupunkt units so can't be 100% sure

Our Hymer 674 came with a multifunctional sterling wheel - we specified a Pioneer radio as a dealer installation. The controls work perfectly but we do get some interference with fm only which they are trying to sort out. The radio also has Airplay which means we can use google maps or whatever without the need for a separate sat nav system. The drop down bed is really stiff to ‘drop down’ but we haven’t used it yet. We have silk duvets which are thinner without compromising the tog factor.

I think the future probably lies with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, with voice control rather than steering wheel ones.

We have a B678DL and it came with a factory fitted Zeneca head unit connected to steering wheel controls which work perfectly, I don’t see why Hymer would disable the connections, as others have said TW are trying it on.?

With the new drop down beds Hymer now use certainly not as much room up there as there used to be as the rear has to be hard up against the roof for the latches to engage.
It's just a case of positioning stuff carefully providing you do that I've had ours closed with quilts & pillows up there & in the winter often put extra clothes up there, thick winter coats etc.

Thanks for your reply Lenny ,I hope that TW can adjust the latches I have tried to put bedding towards the front but could not close the latches. They have to undo everything to replace the wall paper that they ripped while adjusting the bed before delivery. They now also say the radio can have an adaptor fitted so I can use the steering wheel controls ,they could fit it at the same time as the repairs are carried out if I want them too!

Thanks for your reply Eddie I think TW display the older Columbia unit in the showroom but told me the would fit the newer better unit " New York" .they now tell me they can fit unit so I can have some controls on the steering wheel.

As far as I can see there isn't any adjustment on the bed catches, a plastic peg locates into a slot on a plastic block. There is some forward and aft adjustment on the main locating arms but the plastic block is mounted on that so the whole lot would move together.
If you take the side curtain down and you can get a good look at it.

Hymer and after market fitters what can I say ( all sorted now) I was told by alarm fitter even can bus wires missing had to pick up elsewhere had him confused

Thanks Lenny, it's going into the dealer end of August to have 10 problems fixed (new van ) so I will see what they can do? They have now said the radio can be controlled by the steering if I would like them to fix it!
