We are planning a trip to France for the first time, we are a retired couple with a small terrier. We don't want to stay on sites with slot machines, bars, nightclubs etc...
We would like sites that are small and quiet, can anyone recommend where to look for such sites please? Is there a good website/book available?

If you are going out of high season you'll find most sites are fairly quiet. We use the acsi discount card scheme and apart from the South of France have rarely been in busy ones.. The acsi scheme is well worth it as its only about £15 or so and you save that in just a few nights discount.

When and for how long are you going?
What sort of area are you interested in?
Have you considered using Aires de Camping-Cars?
France is a huge country and you will have a huge choice.
There are hundreds of members on Fun and most could give you any number of recommendations.

Welcome to Fun by the way.

Welcome!
When you say 'sites' do you mean proper motorhome sites? Alternatively, have you investigated the French systems of 'aires' - that's all we tend to use.
Have a look at www.searchforsites.co.uk - this covers all types of places to stop and it's free!

Thanks for the replies folks.

We are renting a van from U.K., it has a loo and shower. We are going on the ferry to Cherbourg. I have just booked a site Manor de L'Abbage near Caen as we would like to visit the D-day beaches. Then in to ? somewhere else. We don't want to spend the holiday driving all the time, we would like to sit and chill and site see places at leisure.

We are renting to see if we like it enough to warrant buying a motorhome.

The area of the D-day landings has plenty of aires. We were on the one at Juno beach a few months ago. There is a visitor centre that you should find interesting.
As said by others the concept of motorhoming is different from caravanning. A campsite with the clubhouse, pool, camp shop, play area etc. is not your destination. You can go to the destination you choose (on the continent you can use Aires) stay a day or two then move on. Plenty to see and do or just bumble around various towns and villages. France is a vast country so don't try to race round seeing it all. Just the North coast where the Normandie beaches are will give you plenty to keep you occupied.

By the way, the rental company are OK about taking it out of the country aren't they? Not all allow this.

Wyn,
Thanks for the reply, I did check with the rental company and have booked it to go to Europe. I shall look into the aires, I love the idea of just bumbling around! Sounds just the ticket

Just to get you into the feel of things download Camper contact and see just what is on offer by way of sites and more so aires in France.

If you happen to get to the Limousin where Parc Verger is then give us a shout as we are only an odd mile away and your terrier can meet our Border terrier.

Thanks all,
I shall look up the suggestions, I forgot to say we are going mid June for 13 nights. Is that a busy time for motorhomes in France ? I know it's not the French school holidays.

We found this one purely by chance. Broken Link Removed It's a small farm site in the Dordogne region. Couple of showers and toilets, Electric, nice pool. When we were there (August) there were only three small tents and us. It's up a bit of a winding lane but I got a 7.3m unit up there OK.

Nearby are "The Jardins de Eyignac" well worth the visit and you can overnight there free of charge if you visit the gardens (no facilities)

I would agree with above Parc Verger is a great site and really peaceful and often has a few Funsters there.

http://www.parcverger.com

A little further on is Twin Lakes and is also a peaceful friendly site. Probably a Funster here as well.

You are far enough south to almost guarantee good weather and warm evenings.

Mid June will be perfect. (y)
The weather should be good, the days are long and it won't be too crowded. You will love it. Might see you there. :D

Welcome, you may not want to drive around but the country side of France is very easy to drive around and is beautiful and surprisingly quiet and very good to explore at a very leisurely pace..... you will love it....(y)

Caravanner 40 years. Motorhome 8
We were caravanners for many years and changed to motorhoming 2 years ago. Love it. Just one tip, if you don't have bikes make sure at first to use sites within easy walk of village or shop etc., as it has taken us some time to get used to the idea of shopping en route, as we were used to having a car with caravan. Just a different method of travelling but has renewed our enthusiasm after 40 years. No need to book ahead in France. Just book your crossings.

Firstly as others have said you will be astounded how quiet the roads are in France thus making driving a pleasant experience which can't be said of most of the UK. Do note the change in speed limits on all non motorway 'unlimited' roads without a centre reservation, this has been reduced to 80kph!

As for quiet camping spots where you can relax and enjoy a day or two in the sun don't be put off by the first Aire that you may see, they are all different!

Here are a few links to Aires and campsite locations...

https://www.aire-service-camping-car-panoramique.fr/
http://en.airecampingcar.com/
http://www.archiescampings.eu/
https://www.campercontact.com/nl/
http://www.campingcar-infos.com/index.php
http://www.camping-municipal.org/
http://www.i-campingcar.fr/accueil.htm
https://www.park4night.com/carte_lieux
https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/

Many Aires have a limit on the number of nights that you can stay (2,3,4 or more, rarely just one) but on the plus side they are either very cheap of even free.

We have a list of almost 500 that we have personally visited a majority of which we have stayed on and our penchant is for rural places often alongside canals or other waterways. Our hardest job nowadays is finding new places to stay!

Twin Lakes September 2016 @JaG @Popeye and @Ali n Tim - definitely not good weather and a warm evening that day - it was so bad that Mr and Mrs was cancelled......

The sun came out the following day though - it was positively Hawaiian...
