Wife and I are planning a trip from Norway to Croatia and Greece end of the summer, near enough all sorted route wise. She just threw a spanner in the works and said there is a concert in Dublin on her "really want to do list", early September, can we make a detour was her words!!.

Never taken the RV there and am unsure if the caravan / camping clubs in UK give offers and discounts on ferries or sites there. We have been members of several up until the last couple of years but not renewed any after things opened up.

Just seen that there are ferry crossing from Cherbourg to Dublin, but very few camp sites in and around Dublin if anyone can give some help.

Hi. If you are going to Ireland I recommend you look at Total Motorhome Ireland. We stayed in a car park at Dun Laoghaire. Right near the marina and the DART suburban rail service into central Dublin. We did look at a car park in central Dublin but didn’t fancy leaving the van there! All are listed on Park 4 Night. Who are you going to see?

Good morning, thanks for the info and am on it now. We are going to see Garth Brooks.

I suppose it depends how big your RV is (I tend to equate RV with 8ton monsters).
We free stayed on a quiet sea side road south of Dublin and caught the train but it was in a PVC. 'Motorhome craic' are a very helpful group.

8 ton is a small one, the large 35-40' long weigh anywhere between 10-16 tons

Morning, yes 35 foot and 7,5 tonne so we are better off on a site or park 4 night areas, whats interesting in Norway is that if you are registered as a motorhome they class all this as a max 3.5t and thus you don't pay higher road tolls.

We have just returned for a 5 week trip of northern Europe and no issues with any Park 4 night recommendations.

From what I read its going to be best to park away from Dublin and bus or rail into the concert.

We had looked at importing a bigger unit from the US but saw that on near enough all our trips the past years we really had to call or specify the length and weight, ours is about the length limit for many Norwegian camp sites and also most of the park 4 night sites we used the past years and even more so the past 5 weeks we were on the border. We have bikes and some kit on the back so total length of 11+ meters and many parking areas mean shunting to park at angles so not always good.

Camac Valley would be a possibility. Good bus service into Dublin.
Read the report on this one on several sights and it does not sound too nice or secure, have registered with Total Motorhome Ireland and will check more when they get back to me.
Irish ferries gave a price of €1000 return with cabins so Her Majesty's quick detour and "tickets are only €81" is climbing drastically.

Ours is 30' and 9.30ton, I find that for ease of use this is about the limit for me, not to big for most sites while still giving a decent bit of room inside.

Unless you are intending to tour Ireland on your visit to the concert, I would find a secure campsite or parking near an EasyJet or ryanair airport with flights to Dublin, with cheap hotels for a couple of nights would be cheaper than the ferry plus fuel.
Plenty of Ryanair locations on your original route. Cherbourg is a big detour, especially if your avatar name is accurate!

I suggest you get the Motorhome Parking Ireland app. It’s free but if you subscribe £1.99 you get all the info for a month

Thanks for the reply, plan is or was to stay a while and visit a few places if possible. Of course you are right ref costs of traveling but at present there are very few cheap flights and definitely no cheap hotels in the region, so the boss is looking outside the area. Lucky I'm a good sailor but her majesty is looking to fly now after seeing the time on the ferry and the possibility of some waves.
We are heading south from Norway so presume there are many places on route we can fly from.
Guess with 400,000 people attending the concerts that week it is not going to be easy getting accommodation and of course flights, RV is still the main plan until I am told otherwise.

Sorry for the late reply, bus days. We have had our unit since 2005 and 90% running on LPG, next to no issues and have just been away for 5 weeks and in that period passed the 400k km's (250,000

LPG here in Norway is 100% propane but we run much better on 50% Butane that is used in warmer climates, vehicle set up that way. We manage a average consumption of 9-10 mpg.

Your model seems heavier than our so be interested to know what it uses on LPG.

We both bought at the same time then.(y)
Although you have done 4 times our mileage.
Just did 250 miles and put in 165 litres of lpg so about 7 mpg that's while "A" framing a little Alto although it wouldn't be much different without.

If you are going to all that expense might I suggest a longer stay in the emerald isle. We spent a week mostly in the north and hardly scratched the surface.
Hope to be going back for a more extensive tour soon.

May I suggest buying the good lady the ticket to the concert, an SAS Business Class to Dublin, pay for a room in the original Jury' hotel in Dublin.

It will save money and grief.

She could even fly back to Berlin/Prague/Vienna and have a good couple of days there.

Then onward to Croatia with everyone refreshed and satisfied.

Question from me to your wife:-

'Who the hell is Garth Brooks?'

Invention of the devil methinks, to cause this much disruption and expense.
After 40+ years of marriage its best I don't show her this message, she does not ask for much. We had looked at a trip to the US and also to try and see one of his concerts there, the way this is going its would have been cheaper. As it is now flights and hotels (what's left) are crazy prices and I presume the business done in Dublin will be serious, 5 concerts and near enough 80,000 seats in each are sold out.

Yes the plan is to spend a couple of weeks and travel around and so return from Dublin to Cherbourg, after that its the Rhine and Mosel and maybe a detour to Croatia.

My wife is Norwegian and I can confirm quietly, that many in this country know very little geography and of the actual history we or my generation were taught at school.

On the comment about SAS and an hotel, it seems these companies knew well in advance that all these people were going to Dublin, very few vacancies. We tried to book SAS tickets and it came the more that the actual Irish ferries ticket, business class was now double.

Thanks for the answer, we did from Kristiansand in the south to the Northern Cape and Russian border area last summer, our average there was 7 mpg, of course no motorways and some challenging terrain at time. Total weight about 7 tonne and not towing.
Just actually worked out our recent trip for the past 5 weeks which was 80% Autobahn driving and we did 10.5 mpg. Prices of fuel all over the area's we drove (Denmark, Germany and Holland) were £2 for petrol and diesel, Autogas was c/a 50% cheaper.

Not sure if you saw a part I wrote earlier ref motorhomes in Norway, but if anyone is visiting then they should register for the toll and road service charges, 20-40% discount on tolls and 50% discount on the inland ferry and bridge crossings. We are classed as under 3,5 tonne due to the motorhome toll systems which is nice.

Original plan: Norway to Croatia. Then 'detour' via Dublin.

Current plan: Norway to Dublin, with 'detour' to Croatia.

I had to laugh

Norway up to the North cape is on the bucket list but realistically its unlikely to happen.
What RV do you have?
Whenever I have checked the the mpg on lpg it's always been around 7, petrol is something around 9mpg but like you I do very little milage on it.

No need for the laugh, we live in Norway and heading to Croatia and Greece, via the Rhine and Mosel according to the boss. Her Maj wants to go to Dublin to see a concert. I know it might sound a bit strange, but Norwegian geography at school was not good in the 60 and 70's, also I live and follow the peaceful life. Happy wife, happy life. PS, I drink the wine (after parking) and she does the map reading, it works.
