Had our dog vaccinated against rabies about 4 weeks ago. We will be going to Europe in the New Year so will need an AHC.

Occasionally a single rabies vaccine doesn't take (didn't on our dog last year hence having it again). Should I get a check NOW as well as having to get her checked again not year before we travel too the EU?

Whole system is a licence for vets to print money

I would have thought it better to have had your dogs rabies shots done in the EU and get them EU passports whilst your over there.certainly cheaper than the UK from all accounts.

Have to have it before otherwise can’t get there in the first place!

Personally I would get it done after around 40 days the minimum recommended is 30 day after vaccination.
Then at least you hVe have options and time to sort any additional arrangements

Thanks - and then get it done again before we go away to get the AHC I guess?

Once a positive titre test result are recorded for the dog in his records then further tests are not needed as long as the vaccination is kept up to date.
No need for additional test for AHC, vet should accept and record the positive result.

Whilst it's important that your dog is protected I'm wondering how you found out he/she wasn't? Did you have a blood test and if so why? Blood tests (titre) are not required for going into the EU.

I must admit our dog was tested when it was a requirement.
I appear to have wrongly assumed that it came back in with the requirement for an AHC.
🙈🙊
Apologies for the wrong assumption.

Although the info I gave in itself is correct.

Our Lily was tested but she had it done when it was mandatory, Tazzy didn't have to have it as it was no longer required. Pre B****t it was strongly implied (some vets said definitely required!) that there would be a need to have the blood test done for travel outside of the UK but fortunately that bit wasn't made compulsory so this may be why you thought it had actually been implemented. There are some countries where you do need to have a blood test done for, such as Morocco, but mainland EU doesn't require them (I haven't checked every country so there may be odd ones who do but not the popular ones).

No need for second rabies vaccine, no need for rabies titre test for an AHC. Just so long as the details of the vaccine are recorded, and its within the expiry date, you'll be fine to get an AHC when the time comes.

You day a single vac doesn't take, occasionally. ?There is no requirement to have a blood test to check if the rabies shot has taken ,just a record of the vaccination itself is sufficient. Unless that is you are going to travel beyond the EU.

No need to get another rabies jab they are happy just to take your money and think it has worked. That’s the same with AHC or Pet Passport. Joke really but they get your money. If you do want to get another rabies jab get in the EU. It will be cheaper, and I would combine it with getting an EU PP, so no more AHC‘s required.

Because we want for the eu passport just before it was cancelled and the blood test showed the vaccination hadn’t taken

I'm intrigued though as to why you had the blood test done at all as it wasn't a requirement?

For the old pet passport we were required to have the vaccination followed by a blood test to see if it had worked (which it hadn’t) before the passport could be issued (which it wasn’t because in the meantime the scheme was ended)

Apparently the rabies vaccination does not always work. I am happy to pay for the blood test to make sure it has

I know about the old system as it was mandatory to have the blood test, but just wondered why you had it done now when it isn't required, your last sentence clears that up I think - it suggests YOU chose to do it, that's all I was trying to clarify.

Chris (if i remember your name right) what you need legally is proof of rabies jab in the form of a certificate or other proof from your vet, you need to wait 21 days from the rabies jab to travel if it is a first time jab, this doesnt apply if its a booster.

We then sent a copy of the cert. to Abbeywell vets who we are using for our AHC as they are 10mins away from the tunnel and a great price. They have also complete hundreds of them so little chance of any mistakes.

We dont travel until early December but can pick the AHC the day before we travel anytime between 10am and 6pm week days.

21 days before travel out of the country they got the rabies vaccine in if this is an initial vaccine. (only into the UK if they had the rabies vaccine elsewhere).

Thanks all

Going ton get it checked for our own peace of mind as she didn't have the antibodies the last time around. After that we can get the AHC when we are ready

Excellent - thank you

A further question - it says the AHC can be used for a single entry into the EU - if you exit the EU you need another AHC. So, if we go to Morocco in January can we get another AHC in Morocco to get back into Spain?

Can you not get a EU passport on your way to Morocco?
That would then cover you all over, we have Belgium passports for our 2 pups now and hopefully come May when we go back over will test them out.
