Hi all,

Have just got our first motorhome and we have 2 dogs who we will be taking away with us in the MH. Can I ask anyone who travels/holidays with their dogs the best thing/s to use with their dogs........I know dogs have to remain on leads in sites, so do you use a tether post with a line clipped to it, or any other handy must haves that make like easier and safer for your dogs :D

Thanks for any advice

Since 2016, caravans before that, folding Caravan, tents before that
Important to have them tethered in the van too. We use harnesses and attach them with seatbelt adaptors. It’s for your own safety as well as theirs.

On sites we have long leads and a ground peg, but they get very tangled up, especially the stupid one

These depend on everyone else’s dogs also being tethered of course

We prefer to use our gated windbreak which allows them plenty of free roaming outside and freedom to come into the van when they want to.

I have 3 leads attached together which gives about a 6 metre line that's attached to the handle for helping gerries enter the motorhome :p jade likes to go out on that so she can potter about.
Haven't figured a way to have a second one for milo yet without them being tangled I knots. While travelling they are harnessed in on seatbelt clips

We have two dogs and stake a running line parallel to the Motorhome. We attach two carabiners to the running line and we attach our extending leads to the carabiners. This arrangement allows a large range of movement along the length of the outside of the Motorhome and still allows the dogs to enter/leave the Motorhome as they please.

It works for us (apart from the odd tangle!).

We have 2 Weimaraner's, we tried tethering them but the big one just pulls out the ground anchor so we got a Jormax windbreak and that did the trick, Ace is over 6 1/2 Stone and he hasn't managed to knock it down (yet) it also gives them freedom to go in and out of the MHome as they please (which is more than the misses lets me do)

We have a big d clip thing on a handle just inside the door.
We clip one of the retracting leads to it.
Using a retracting lead means Dillon has 6 metres of freedom but the lead does not tangle.
I bet jade could tangle it

Yessss.. but Dillon is quite bright too.. he understand commands like, ‘go round’’left’’right’’go under ‘ and stuff like that.
In fact we know now if he manages to tie the lead round the chairs or table he has done it deliberately for attention. When we do not respond he just sorts it out him self very quickly !

I use two of these steel-wire tie out leads joined together for our girl:

With one of these shock-absorbers at the van end of things:

Which in turn is latched on to the towing ring on the front of the van, or the tow ball on the rear. Or round one of the hydraulic jack legs.

Or looped around a nearby tree - depends where and how we're pitched.

All great ideas, thanks so much.......we have an awning with the MH, so hoping that'll give them a bit of freedom but will look into the windbreak option too (y)

I have a black alsation/english springer cross, he is very intelligent.
I used his flexilead to attach him to a post but he chewed through in a few minutes, so I fixed a metre of small link chain to it thinking that he wouldn't be able to get to the cord bit but he ran over & around the other line post so he could chew the cord off again!

A 6 metre chain sorted him out!:D2

That’s exactly what we use for our running line.

...but has anyone solved the problem of them catching their lead under the water bowl and turning it over.

We use one of those training long lines and attach it to the towbar. Doesn't stop him getting tangled though.
Inside we use a harness with seatbelt male fitting This then plugged into a female seat belt strap which I have secured to a fitting behind passenger seat.

We use the type of cable shown above, fixed to an eye bolt I put near the step at the back and the other end is attached to the chassis at the front, then a lead is attached to that to give a run.
Did original attach wire to the step but even our little JRT would nearly rip the step off.

We use a long lunging rein for horses. We loop it through the door step and gives 7m of free movement.

In the van when travelling, we have a harness on the dog and a short heavy duty elasticated lead - we pass the handle of the lead through one of the travelling seat belts. There is sufficient give/slack to allow the dog to lie down turn over etc, but does work if you have to stop urgently without any injury to the dog.

All great advice just be careful that any outside tethering leads take into account awning legs. When they get wrapped around them they can pull the legs down. If travelling on continent consider taking muzzles as they are often requested on some buses, trains and boats. (sometimes you just show them but don't necessarily have to put them on).

A wind breaker around the van gives dogs plenty of freedom.I notice lots of people use an harness,we have allways carry ours in a cage no exceptions.Just a note my brother used to travel with his dog fastened to seat with a harness .The dog was killed (Broken back) when a car crashed into him head on whilst parked .

We have carabiners permanently clipped onto the van to secure points, 3 of them. We just clip the dog leads directly onto them, easy to do 1 handed.

Putting the anchorage points on the mh wall for the awning legs avoids any leads getting wrapped round the legs. Our dogs still manage to tip over their water bowl regardless of shape. I try to position it so it is near the limit of travel so they can reach it but not get the lead under it. We connect the leads to the mh wheels using one of the short chains used to connect two dogs to one lead, just threaded through one spoke of an alloy wheel and clipped onto the leads.
