query re my road tax

I have just insured a vehicle with the insurance to begin at midnight this coming Saturday.

Tomorrow I was going to contact DVLA to road tax it... I accept that I will lose out and have to tax it from beginning of November ... BUT ... my question is.. WILL they road tax it?

To obtain road tax don't they check that the vehicle is insured and MOT'd? So since mine won't be insured until Saturday am I not going to be able to road tax it ...

Will be a pain having to go back to insurers to change documents which are probably already in the post ...

They do and without it you can't tax the motor. Also remember we no longer get a tax disc therefore you don't have to wait until it arrives before driving it. Taxing it on line means your vehicle is instantly ready to roll

Do it online on saturday and provided the insurance people and mot people put their bits on you will be fine.

Given that the van won't be insured until Sunday can you not just do the road tax on line on Sunday?

If no insurance, it should be off the road so no tax is not a major issue. If you tax the vehicle online when it is insured, you have notification that it is taxed and then you can use it. Seamless really! I know, I've done it!

There is usually a time given for when it should start, most commonly 12 noon or 12 midnight whichever it is don't attempt to tax it before that specified time

Thanks all .. will have to get up extra early on Sunday .. as out early.... I just thought with it being weekend it wouldn't go through ... thought I'd cocked up doing it from midnight on the Saturday as knew wouldn't be a problem if I'd done it earlier... wasn't thinking. Thanks all.

No Problem Joy --you will be able to drive the van once it's insured --Come Monday if it won't let you tax it online you simply go to your local Post office that taxes vehicles -- just done it with this red transit

If you are very unlucky and drive it before you tax it after Saturday,s Ins, but before you tax
say on Monday you are liable for a fine if stopped for any reason, I am just being a bit over cautious

Hi Joy - I have recently taken out insurance on our van with Comfort and they only e mailed the docs. No real need for printed certificate that I am aware of now providing the insurer has updated the database.

You could always try on Saturday Joy, if they pick it up they won`t let you tax it

Thanks, Peter... that's what I suspected ... even though I would have tried to do everything right. I will do what Wasp suggests and try on the computer on Saturday ... if nothing else and the worst came to the worst hopefully something would have registered on their database to show I tied.

I know, Terry, but I'll be driving it on Sunday .. so it would be illegal.. and knowing my luck..

Depends who you insured it with. Most do it almost instantaneously but one company I was with couple of years ago took 3 weeks, and then only after I reminded them - although they had actually sent out the documents straight away. May be better now as it's so critical; hope so for your sake anyway.

I hate to leave any very vehicle uninsured since years ago when a chap I knew lost a brand new car. He won an escort xr3i in a competition, but being young had to save up to insure it. So he parked it behind locked gates at his parents. A week later it was stolen. No insurance, and the police never found it, so total loss. He was heartbroken to say the least
