I'm a newbie and always will be. You never know it all.
Can any one help with the best way to get about in London? We are stopping on a CL in Ilford from tomorrow for about 4/5 days.
I have a Yorkshire Metro Bus pass my wife has not although she is 65, we would like to hop on and off busses /tube etc etc all the usual touristy things so what's the most cost effective way?

The OAP (is that the right terminology these days?) bus pass works nationally and that will get you around London albeit very slowly. Combined with an Oyster card it may be the best and cheapest way. The link shows a Visitor card which is new to me, so maybe cheaper than the standard Oyster?

Edit: Just noticed you're off tomorrow so too late for bus passes if your wife hasn't got one.

The London Underground all day long if it were me. Newbury Park station is about a mile up the road from where you are staying. Certainly the quickest way around town. 👍

Just use credit/debit contactless cards at the stations for payment.

Just use the tube and use a contactless debit or credit card for tapping in and out at the turnstiles. Make sure you use the same card each time. Then depending on how many journeys you make, it will automatically charge your account for the cheapest ticket, be it a single ticket, day pas or travel card. Super easy and very efficient.

PS. As there are two of you you'll need to use a different contactless card each.

You don’t need an Oyster card anymore. Just tap in, and out with bank card.

When we used to go to London for the weekend we used to get an underground all day travel ticket each.

Not sure what would be cheaper payg or upfront payment.

Use Google maps to get directions - set to public transport, obviously. It'll give you bus routes with the correct stops, and tube stations. Also, a lot of the touristy bits are actually very close together - it's often as quick to walk, or even quicker, than using the underground.

We use the buses, it's a fixed fare irrespective of the journey length and you get to sight-see en route. (Tip - press the button for your stop and wait, you don't actually need to get up until the bus stops - this means you can use upstairs without risking coming down head first whilst the bus is moving).

I believe the contact less payment system (tap in start of travel, tap out as you leave bus or station) has a daily cap. Once you reach that in London further travel that day is "free", but you continue to tap in/out. using same payment card. Stops you needing to buy the old travel card system.

I stayed stayed at Abbeywood CAMC the other weekend. I paid about £10 for a one day travelcard, which covered zones 1-6, all busses, trains, trams, tube etc. Normally about £14 I think but as I have a railcard then I got the normal railcard reduction. Incidentally the railcard was 'free' as I used Tesco clubcard points to get it.
