There's a lot of it about. I am currently in the second week of an 8 week course of radiotherapy, and I know two others who are currently having treatment, either brachytherapy or external beam radiotherapy.

I had the brackytherapy treatment 3 years ago, In on a Sunday, treatment on Monday, discharged on Tuesday and back to work on the Wednesday. My PSA is now 0.34. and my consultant is very pleased and only wants to see me every year now.

He also told me that, if he had his way, PSA tests would start for all men aged 45.

I started having PSA tests when I reached 60 as part of my annual "wellman" clinic. That gave me a base line from which to base all further test results on. Everything was normal for the first 3 years and then there was a slow increase in PSA levels, further investigation and a biopsy diagnosed Low grade Prostate Cancer.

As said before by many Funsters, go and have the PSA test, the earlier the better.

hello Mel, good wishes to you , i had the operation a couple of years ago, using turp technique (trans urethal resction of the prostate) through the penis :Eeek:, i watched some of the operation as i had an epidural, weird:whatthe:, hope the psa test goes ok, i have to have a test every 3months, which curtails some activity:Sad: i also had to self catheterise every 2/3 days for 6 months, which was not nice or exciting:Doh: also had biopsies taken and ok i hope , see the surgeon again on 27th may, a few years ago i also had a pituitary tumour Called (brain tumour) and after chemotherapy and 6weeks of radiotherapy , (very tiring) again i have to see the neurospecialist every year now for the rest of my life, they say it will come back:Sad::Eeek: but dont know when
i say this because i hope you can have a positive attitude and anyone that has had it, or about to have it done, every time i went to the hospital carmarthen, Prince Phillip at llanelli, or Morriston, swansea, i always saw somebody worse than me, including a lot of courageous ladies who had lost their hair , or limbs in other cases, so keep well

we only have one life , so enjoy it, it would be easy to go in a corner when things may get tough, or you dont feel well, again think positive ,

look at this wonderful site to help you and cheer you up :thumb:

Sending you a big hug and loadsa strong thoughts... I know what it feels like to be sitting on a time bomb but hey, what a journey life is until it goes off:Smile: There will times of fear in the quiet nights but boy is there laughter when shared with friends. Hugs, hugs, hugs.:thumb:

So pleased you are improving Mel...............................
Please, please, please fellas get yourselves checked out, and remember a PSA doesn't have to be elevated for there to be a problem !
If there are any other signs or symptoms see your GP.

Operation went well and no problems found elsewhere (Lymph nodes). I have been given the all clear so very relieved as you might imagine. Just got to manage the incontinence now with pelvic floor exercises until things return to normal.

Oh Keef. PLEASE PLEASE come back and let us know how you are going on... we don't like to ask too many questions as it can seem invasive on someone's privacy ... but we do care.

Fingers crossed that all goes well and you will soon come out of the other side smiling. Remember, that any of the side effects, etc, are nothing to worry about at this moment of your journey ... get through the operation and get back to the point of loving life again..

Keep strong.

Joy, your such a comfort.......::bigsmile:::bigsmile:

Hi Mel,
We haven't met yet but good luck. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 4 years ago and was initially told it,was too late for any treatment and go home and update my will - rather ruined my day. Fortunately my consultant said they would give radiotherapy a go and hey no I am still here annoying everyone 4 years later, psa 21 when diagnosed and now 0.5. Whilst for those who are diagnosed with the disease it is a difficult time I think it is far worse for our wives/partners who have to support us through it and I often think that apart from my being bloody minded and not prepared to give in or at least not until I had reached pensionable age and got some return on all the taxes I have paid without the support of my other half it would have been far harder. So to all wives and partners who are supporting those with prostrate cancer can I say a big thank you.

Finally to show my confidence in the future I have just bought a new motorhome and plan to use it for,the next 10 years!
