The bit with the recipe is missing, or is it a trade secret?
Shame, love a good fishcake.
Chinese do something with rice and fish, large round ball, tad bigger than a scotch egg. Suppose substituting the mashed spud with rice.

A fishcake is made with minced fish and mashed potato formed into a round flat cake....breadcrumbed then fried
That is a fish patty. aka, a scallop....slice of spud, layer of white fish, slice of spud..battered then fried.

Regional names vary of course.

I agree with @pappajohn fishcakes are taty and minced fish coated with egg, breadcrumbs and then fried'
Patties are a piece of fish between 2 slices of taty and then batter, deep fried.
Must a town thing @Ralph-n-Bev as that's what they have always been called in Ponte, 9 miles from Wakey.
We always had Pattie n chips when kids cos we couldn't afford a fish, with 7 kids I,m not surprised.

I now have fish patty instead of fish......better value with fish around £4:50 around here then another £1:50 for chips.
Fish Patty, spam fritter and chips...around a fiver.

Yes but there's not many places that sell proper patties we have found as we have travelled around the country, some places have never even heard of them.

Used to love the cakes we got in Bradistan. Layers of fish and potato, with lashings of pepper, then fried in batter :)

As a variation to fish butties and chip butties, sometimes had a cake butty :)

Couldn't believe it when I went to Glasgow in the 60's, only 'fish', no choice, and they deep fried the pies. The deep fried Mars Bar came much later along with the deep fried, battered Pizza slice!

Lemon zest ) .chop all up and mash into a paste

Mix with mashed up salmon
Add salt and pepper
Mould into little cakes and heat (no oil) in a pan 3-4 minutes

Nomenclature is a minefield, even we Tykes can’t agree amongst ourselves what to call things. The bread item that you put a fishcake in (slices of potato and fish) is a breadcake where I’m from.

I'm from Bradford and know what a cake is. But even a few miles away in Keighley (spit), they called them scones ?

Oh, and when we went chumping, they went progging. Heathens

Not often I disagree with you Joy... But seriously?

Too ponsey for my taste. Fish cakes should only have fish, potato and batter with maybe a touch of salt...

That Oliver chap has ruined many a good dish by poncing it up...

Salmon :confused::unsure:

Great stuff, have tried various recipes and methods. Nearest blend to a fish cake I have made is; Mashed potatoes, flaked cod or haddock, chopped parsley, not too much, a hint of anchovy oil ( others you cannot tell it's fish at all, a little egg to bind. Make into the trad' shape and either batter or breadcrumb. Lard if you want a coronary, peanut or maize if you like living until your pension. Never butter or olive oil, too low a burning temperature.
So whose up for a competition at a rally? Money raised for a charity. Oh sh-t just realised have given the winning recipe away:D
