Janie has been up in the hills today behind Pedreguer here in Spain, and had her first sighting of processionary caterpillar activity, ? so just a reminder for pet owners to keep an eye out for them. ? Bob.

Keep away from them, their furry bits can cause serious inflammation and worse.

It is a bit early for here, but two years ago we had them in Portugal in September , never even thought of looking up the pine tree we was parked under. ?
Nasty things. ? Bob.

Remember you don't have to touch them. They shed hairs all the time and these will fall downwards if you are beneath them or be blown on the wind.

Well one thing for certain they are not here it’s to bloody cold and wet England has it’s advantages ?

I don't think the wet stops them Steve, ? from 2200hrs tonight we have rain for a week. ?
But then it's been wonderful weather here, people are still on the beach. ? Bob.

You can report them to your local council in Spain and they should come and treat the trees, usually by spraying them. I have also seen people cut off the infected branches before the caterpillars hatch and burn the branches. The hairs can cause terrible irritation and they are even capable of killing dogs, cats etc......really bad news. I was told that we had some close by to us hatching last week, it’s the earliest I have ever heard of.

The pine processionary is really bad news, but be aware there is also an Oak processionary which is just as bad.

I sprayed a small cat as it was precessing with a copious amount of water when it was doing my veranda and it had absolutely no effect what so ever; the man operating it was inside a glass capsule and appeared invulnerable to cold Scottish water.

I was most discombobulated.

Oh dear, just checked our weather forecast, we are on an amber alert tomorrow from the Spanish met office, for rainfall in the Cartagena and Mazarron area, 10-40 % probability of up to 100mm of rainfall (12 hours accumulated precipitation) so could be some flooding. Looks like very rough seas along the local coast as well.
Better batten down the hatches!

The forecast here is for 200mm over five days, good for the aquifers!
I can´t remember caterpillars this early, we had huge problems with them last year, there were literally thousands of them in a neighbours pine tree which invaded our garden as well as the other surrounding properties and caused us all to come out in rashes and feel poorly. We had to get specialists in to cut off and burn all the branches containing the nests, between 40 and 50 nests in all, took them about 5 hours.
Oh, and its not just cats and dogs that have problems, small children have died too. The caterpillars don´t just drop hairs, they fire them out for some distance when they feel threatened, so be careful of eyes if anywhere near them!

Beware these are around in Brittany, just seen a line of them nearly right across the road in Malestroit.
By the time I went back to get a photo somebody had cleared most of them away.

We think Mrs B stood on some hairs in Cabo Pino last year. Started complain the soles of her feet were on fire, then her tounge swelled up and she couldn't talk straight. Got reception to call a taxi as an emergency and told the driver to take her straight to urgencias. Couldn't do much else as I had the three dogs with us and it would have took too long to unplug the m/H get off the ramps drive to the hospital, etc. Hydrocortisone injections and she was OK, but now it's a constant worry. And she's not a allergic whinge type - outdoors all the time, horse riding, mucking out, carrying ying hay, doing sea kayak trips, etc etc. Came as a bolt out of the blue,as never had an issue before back in UK with anything and we've lived here with caterpillars for 14 years and never had a prblem before. So stay clear of them!!

We have just got to El Rocio from Tabernas and have seen hardly any cocoons here at all which is unusual, up in Tabernas there were loads up in the pine trees. ?

I also left the hose pipe lying on the ground and found they had all crawled up inside it, so the campsite took it and burnt the pipe, nasty blighters, nasty rash. funny, they didn't effect the horses.

Yesterday we stopped at Lermot Aire, Brittany , went for walk along beach and back on coast path and saw more processionary caterpillars and we noticed the nests in the tree so we moved on.
