Beware dog owners we were out on our bikes today and saw our first lot of processionary caterpillars, our dog had run for a mile or more on cycle tracks surrounded by pine trees and lucky enough there did not seem to be any, but once on the road we saw them crossing, we are Nazare Portugal don't know if this is early we thought so !
In Spain we get them January onwards so keep a eye out for them. :( Bob.

We had one on the edge of our property in Spain.

Then we had a big fire.

None for a while I think. But I am not taking the micky.

Thing is, we were ignorant of these little critters. But for a Friend who pointed it out, triggering my memory of a post on MHDarkside. I would of simply battered it out of the way with my hedge trimmers.

Dangerous little gits these are. And with many newbie travellers to these parts, best to spread the word.

Thanks for the warning. We are in Silves and would not have thought there was a chance of active ones yet.

Yes the fires did get fid of loads, we live in Javea and Janie is always out walking montgo and surrounding areas but you still see them, there are many dog owners that know nothing about them.

Thanks for the warning. We are in Silves and would not have thought there was a chance of active ones yet.

We thought they were very early, when we passed through northern spain we saw loads of trees with bags fitted obviously from last year and they had thousands of dead ones in, I know it's a lot of work but very effective way to get rid of them. (y) Bob.

Thanks for highlighting this - very useful, just looking at getting a supply of apis pills to go into my dog's 1st Aid kit that we take away with us - any recommendations on brand or dosage? Thanks :)

My neighbour lost his dog through processionary catapillers when he was in Spain a couple of years ago. This was early in February and he had not known about them. They had only been there a couple of weeks when it happened.

My wife and I both came into contact with these nasty things. We both ended up in hospital.
Do not mess with them.

While I know this is a report of Processionary Caterpillar in Spain its worth mentioning that any sighting of them in the UK is a reportable to the Forestry Commission who are trying to keep them out. They are known as processionary moths despite the fact its the caterpillar is the processionary part. Apart from being a danger to animals and humans they cause massive defoliation of our native trees and ultimately death of the trees. More info can be found here
https://forestry.gov.uk/pineprocessionarymoth don't forget they can affect more than oak or pine

We had the 'fluffy' nests in our pine trees, our Spanish neighbour used to shoot the nests with his shotgun (approved by local authority).............

I cut the trees down(y)

I thought they came out much earlier in the year though
