Nice plate but I already have 102 TOD on the Volvo as my birthday is January 02nd! I was offered £4500 for it 3 years ago by a cash buyer but I'd never sell. I'm looking for something fun for the van with a minimal spend (perhaps £500 or so). I must say, at £250 it's pretty good.

You cannot put a personalised plate on a vehicle that makes the vehicle appear to have a later registration than the actual registration date?
My motorhome was first registered in 2000 with the prefix "X". As I interpreted the rules, I can only have another X or anything earlier.

Yes that's right. The plate has to be the same age or older than the vehicle.

When they fitted new number plate, local garage said you've got a private plate there. You just have to change you're name to Luke lol

That's correct.
Ours is actually a 57 Plate but after a couple of Hoorays tried to patronise me because of the age of the 'van (and I'm not joking), I put an X Plate on it. Now it really "Does look good for it's age"

Daft question - I've seen the DVLA website (and others) selling plates, but how do you actually get the new plate onto the vehicle?
I don't mean velcro or a screwdriver I'd like to know what paperwork is involved and how long does it take please?

Buy plate, print off PDF authority document, walk to Halfords, make plates, fit plates, phone insurance- really is that simple

Got to also get V5 amended by DVLA to show new number is put against your name and address,pay any fees due, how else will the ANPR cameras that nick you, know where to send the fines

You do the transfer online now. Takes less than 5 minutes and they send new V5 in post. In 1 hour yesterday morning I did the online transfer went out and got plates made, fitted them and amended the insurance.
Really was easy peasy

ILLEGAL ... beware it will cost ya £100.... + ... more if cop registered the fine with DVLA... who will legally prevent you from using the registration ... +other complications with insurance ...
Just saying .... Even the companies selling the plates can be persecuted for aid & abet a summary offence .

w rote my car off with a personal plate
read through dvla website thought plate was lost !!

when i rang them they said as long as registered in your name
taxed and tested you can take it off instantley on line
for a fee of £80’oo

did it online written off car received an instant new reg no and certficate to buy new reg plate
log book followed later.
private plate was then on retention

took retention slip to car dealer
which was assigned to new car(gap insurance)

hardest bit was car makers/dealers recognising
the same no on identical cars till their systems caught up
