I would get their email address, or even phone them.

Start a private conversation with them, click the envelope icon at the top of the page, click start new conversation and then write their username in the recipients box.

I’m not sure that is necessary, people didn’t use to cut their cheques in half to separate sort code from account number.

True. And thinking about it I don't always do that although I often do it by 2 messages sent separately probably no more secure. I am though a lot more careful about paying by internet than by cheque (anyone remember them!) And if its a reasonably large sum if I pay by bank transfer often pay a small amount first and after confirming it's arrived pay the rest.

That is sensible as there is room for error in the actual transcribing of the numbers. It is good that the banks now have further checks to help make sure that you are paying to the correct account as I found out recently when people paying into my account for the August rally realised my account name different to my forum name !

I thought banks check the name against the bank details these days to stop money being sent to non matching details to reduce scams and stop mistakes/typos. (Barclays app definitely does)

I am forever surprised by people who do not want to give strangers their account name, sort code and account number. It is printed on every cheque you have ever given out (some to strangers) so it is hardly top secret.

Ok would you put your bank details on a post that everyone can read, I don’t think so, you may be happy to share it but I’m not, end of
