A motorhome is a Passenger vehicle M1 (less than 8 passenger seats). M2 & M3 is a passenger vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats. The 3.5 tonnes restrictions are for Goods vehicles category N. Trailers are category OSorry @Jabberwocky I just looked up the road traffic act, turns out we are both wrong:
It is an offence to drive a vehicle in the outside lane of a motorway which is:
- towing a trailer; or
- a goods vehicle with a maximum laden weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes; or
- a goods vehicle between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes without a speedlimiter being fitted; or
- a passenger vehicle which can carry 8 or more passengers with a maximum laden weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes; or
- a passenger vehicle which can carry 8 or more passengers with a maximum laden weight between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes without a speedlimiter being fitted.
So a Motorhome (M1 (special purpose body)) of any weight is the same as a car. However speed restrictions do apply to Motorhomes
Motorhomes or motor caravans (not more than 3.05 tonnes maximum unladen weight) 30 (48) 60 (96) 70 (112) 70 (112)
Motorhomes or motor caravans (more than 3.05 tonnes maximum unladen weight) 30 (48) 50 (80) 60 (96) 70 (112)
Note the weight limit applicable is for the unladen weight not the MGVW.
