I have a fairly new Hymer B544 and my wife is not able to access the over cab bed due to mobility issues so she sleeps on the near side settee very comfortably. She has a Duvalay which rolls out onto the settee in seconds and because it is 'open' on one side she can get out easily during the night when nature calls. In the morning we just roll the Duvalay up and put it away, again a very rapid operation.

Don't be put off the idea of bed making because if you use a sleeping bag or Duvalay it makes things very easy. If you used this system the Hymer referred to earlier would be ideal and future depreciation wouldn't be a major problem as there wouldn't be much, if any.

Wonderful! I'm of exactly the same frame of mind with my humble and ageing Toyota - it's so nice not to ogle and drool over other posher, newer, bigger, sleeker, more expensive vans cos they're not as good (for me) as the one I already have.
Feel just the same about our little Symbol,,upsized to a coach built but missed the compact dimensions of our tin box so downsized and very happy again...BUSBY.

Reinvigorated by you lot thought I'd have a little surf on the web. Well the good lord google must be following this thread because up came a number of possibilities - of which this was particularly interesting:

http://ads.caravansforsale.co.uk/mo...-berth-berth-2005-used-good-condition-/594012

Now that's more like it, complete with fixed bed and quite a few goodies - low mileage too. Shame it's in London - why do they always have to be miles away?

Anyway, being a complete novice (brand wish), any thoughts on Fiat Auto Trails? Cheers from a far less despondent Dave.

Am inclined to agree. What's the old saying? If it sounds too good to be true it probably is too good to be true.

And there was I - in danger of getting all excited. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Thanks for protecting this (thought I was worldly wise) old duffer from his naivety.

If you can forego the fixed bed and instead consider one with 2 lounges such as the Elddis 400 where you can easily make the rear 'L' lounge into a bed without having to put it away all the time but just push the bedding over during the day to access the toilet compartment you will find these within your budget, or even just consider the traditional pullman dinette with side facing sofa, again very easy to make up the beds and both of these options give you rear travel seats for passengers. If you can get away with ones with a large front, or rear, lounge only where you can have two virtually instant single beds then there are lots and lots of those around for you to choose from.

To be perfactly honest with your budget you're not going to get a fixed bed model as they are too 'young' to fall into that sub £10,000 price bracket.

Well said @Minxy Girl . I have a elddis 400. And that is what we have done. We have made the back long seat into a double bed. And we have changed the bathroom door, so that it hinges inwards so we can leave the bed down. and that still leaves us the forward dinete to eat at. And they are under 6 mtrs . Great little vans.

We have a compass avantgard 150 , this has a rear u shaped lounge , which we always leave down as a full size double bed with a memory foam topper on it which we just turn back in the daytime and then still have the sofa type thing to sit on at a movable table and don't have a front diner at all and havnt missed it yet and everything can still be got at with it down, perhaps wouldn't suit everyone but we are mostly in there in the dark so looks are pretty irrelevant, and we have two lounger chairs that we use outside with the same table we use inside(y)
Not suggesting it would be ideal for you but just saying what we do, and works for us.

Not long enough!
If you can leave it a few months, prices drop towards the end of the season as if selling, they don't want to keep them over winter.
Your 10k budget should pick you up something older, and in reasonable condition.

Still getting started
Before we got our first (current) MH we were very keen on old Hymers for a while - the logic being that even 20yr old ones were better made and included features that many much newer (and more expensive) ones didn't have. We even went to see some at Ikonic who specialise in excellent hand-chosen examples (see http://www.ikonickampers.co.uk/). Theirs are usually a little out of your budget - but as others point out, deprecation is minimal at this age so stretching your budget isn't a "lost" investment in something that's just going to lose money. In the end we went for a newer (but still 10yr old) Burstner as the best compromise for us between build quality/engine age and cost... but we still aspire to get an A-class.

Just wondering why it has to be a coachbuilt unless I missed something. A PVC is better for days out and short stays (did a months tour in ours last year) they don't leak and can be found with fixed beds at that sort of price.

We have a U-shaped lounge with the back middle bit having a drawer and little pull out table top.

Bought two duvalays recently for the two single side beds. Last time away we experimented with leaving the beds made up and just putting the throws back on top as usual and sitting on them. Perhaps that would work for you? :)

Apologies if you are already doing this but have you tried asking the local dealers to look out for something appropriate for you?
