I should imagine that you enter your card details at the kiosk and then top up at the pump. If so, how do you get the receipt?
I've always driven off if it says pre-pay.

I will never use a prepay pump again. I went into a small supermarket and put my card into the reader and a rapid-fire speel came out in French and the card given back, It later started pumping and I filled up and there was a feeling that the pump had been started back at the cashiers desk so I went in and asked to be told I must pay there, so I did. I got my statement later at home and had been charged for all of it TWICE.
I wrote to them but never got a reply. She had pocketed the money in cash and no receipt given from the till. My fault for being gullible.

Interested as I've never seen a pre pay for lpg?

Prepay for LPG is just the same as for diesel. Used it on many occasions on Belgian motorway service areas and never had a problem. LPG on Belgian motorways is generally the same price as it is off the motorways. To get a receipt, just go back to the terminal and press a button for the relevant pump.

What concerned me was the possibility of things going wrong between leaving in essence an open cheque book at the kiosk and filling from the pump. Do you park the van by the pump and take quite a long walk from the van to the kiosk, and then back having filled up? On one occasion two large buses disgorged hundreds of people on the forecourt and it was total chaos. How could the kiosk keep track? Plus the language issue if it does go wrong. Like I said, I just drove off.

Never heard of a prepay lpg pump, usually you pay at a machine near the caisse and get a ticket and enter the code at the pump.
Did the pump ask if you wanted a receipt? Many of the newer pumps have a language option and this sounded like a new pump. It would have been helpful if you had at least understood what the machine was saying, usually after paying, it just tells you to fill up with ( enter product here) at pump no( enter pump number here)
I don’t think you were gullible but it helps to try understand what you are being told or if you don’t understand, try and ask someone.

We use these type of automatic fuel pumps for diesel and LPG with no problems. Prepaid is the wrong term, in that initially the card is approved for payment. So you put the card in and put in the PIN, then take it out when told. Fill up and then make sure you put the card back in. That is when the money comes out and you can get a receipt.

Language is not usually a problem. Often when you put your card in it reckonises it is from UK and automatically changes language to English. Otherwise it usually offers you a choice of language to use.

What confused me there was no auto slot machine there, not the same as when you buy fuel at the 24 hr machine, which I'm quite used to. You had to go to the kiosk, there was just a button on the pump. One was on the péage from Italy, round about Nice. Not sure where the others were.

We stopped to fill up with LPG at a motorway service station in France. Confused the poop out of us until a lorry driver took pity on me and explained in English.
I had to go inside and ask for LPG. He asked how much did I think I needed ???so I asked for 30 euros worth. He took said 30 euros and turned the pump on. I filled up with 22 euros worth, went back, and he gave me a receipt and change.
There was not a card machine for the LPG pump. Still dont understand the logic behind it.
Oh, hang on, it was in France.

If you're using a currency card, such as Caxton, to buy fuel their bank can reserve up to €100 to cover the transaction and hold on to this amount for up to 20 days before releasing the balance.

I think you will find this is because of a higher fire risk with LPG(GPL) and therefore local laws do not permit LPG to be dispensed when the kiosk is not staffed, for safety reasons.

Thus there are some LPG pumps on 24hr stations, but where the kiosk in not staffed 24hr, so one cannot get it unless staffed.

There are other 24hr stations where there is no kiosk any hours and they will not have an LPG pump at all.

Not correct for France. We have filled up with LPG at the Carrefour station in Cite Europe when the kiosk was closed.

Has anyone come across their debit card being blocked to the tune of €850 after purchasing only €54 of diesel? Maybe the fact that I used the high speed pump for lorries incurs a larger amount being blocked than the more usual €150? Despite many attempts to query this I have been simply advised to wait up to 10 days to see if my balance will be properly restored.
