I was wondering if anyone has made the trip to latvia? I am thinking about taking 2 weeks off work to take a trip over. It's a long way but I think I would enjoy it. Any one got any experience of this trip?

I got the ferry to Liepaja from Travenmunde on Friday and must say I really like the country from the little I have saw of it so far. I'm currently in a little campsite that seems to have taken over the grounds of a huge abandoned hotel.

The site is really basic. I paid and then was just told to drive across the grass and find somewhere to park, no pitches as such. Power points dotted around the place. Facilities are pretty crap just small portacabins but I'm not put off by it at all.

I asked for a token for laundry earlier today, paid my 3.50 and was pointed to the far end of the deserted hotel. The place is quite spooky and seems to have been stuck in a time warp. I had to go through a few doors and eventually found an old washing machine plumbed in. Had a good nose about but only ventured as far as the huge tennis room. Every noise you make just echos throughout the place.

Hoping to get in to Riga city centre tomorrow and visit the KGB museum. Have to fly home on Wednesday though so I will carry on exploring on Friday when I return.

Love Latvia so far.

Try Sigulda an hour and a half from Riga.
We were there last year.
You can have a trip down the bobsleigh run( on a cart with wheels) or high wire with the cable car or just bungee jump from the cable car......if you want!
We did the bobsleigh but chickened out of the rest.
Lovely little campsite Lakeside camping camper contact 71763

Thanks, you can be certain I will be stopping by there. I've moved along to a stopover just on the river in Riga. Camping Riga City. Away to have a cycle in to the old town.

Well done on making the trip, so many think about these things and don't actually do them ??
I understand Latvian women are considered to be amongst the most beautiful anywhere in the world, could we have some photos of them next please ?
(and I am somewhat tongue in cheek here before anyone accuses me of being a sexist/weirdo/pervert). That said I really would like to see some photos ??

Keep us posted with your experices, sounds great!

Stayed at a busy little stopover just over the river from Riga old town. It's quite a modern aire. Basic but has everything you need and can't beat it for location. I had a cycle around Riga and ended up catching a tour of the KGB museum 'The Corner House'

Very strange place, quite eerie as you are walking through the hallways housing the cells that prisoners were put in to. The guide tells you all about them and you visit different room such as the interrogation room, the kitchen area and lastly the execution room...

Every yellow and red sticker is where a bullet hole has been found. They had the room soundproofed and they also had a car outside in the courtyard rev it's engine every time they had someone shot. You can just about make out the channel in the ground where all the blood ran in to a drain in the corner.

Worth a visit if anyone finds themselves over this way. Museum entry is free and it's 10 euro for the guided tour.

Couple more pics of the Corner House...

I've actually been back to Scotland for an MRI scan to try see what's wrong with my back but I am back in Latvia now and staying at the same aire. Going to try that site billym suggested then I am heading to Estonia. I have a quick trip back to Aberdeen arranged for the football then back to Tallin for the ferry across to Helsinki followed by a 550 mile trip to Rovaniemi for the away leg of the football.

Going to be a busy few weeks.

Try Park Grutas in Lithuania. You can overnight there and wander round all the Soviet era statuary that had been set out in the trees. Also, Plokstine in Latvia, a Russian nuclear missile silo which had three MIRV's targeted at London, Paris and Madrid. Also Cape Kolka, in Latvia before Riga. Riga is a great city. Estonia a beer lovers, free camping paradise.

Hi monzer. Just checked back on my trip journal for the Baltic journey. We have 2x11kg Gaslow bottles. Didn't refill in Germany but there is plenty of lpg there. Nor Poland. But got lpg in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. There was no lpg in Finland at that time, so arrived in Helsinki full from Tallinn. Lasted us through Finland and Sweden back to Germany.
