just got back from a golfing week in the Algarve, and there were motorhomes everywhere saw some parked up by Faro airport didn't look a great place to stop.

God I wouldn't stop there, I take it you mean somewhere on that busy dual carriageway that leads up to it?

Would not park near the airport. We like a bit of quiet.

Nope...

Not there.

Between the airport and Faro beach.

If you don't want to stop there, fair enough, but brilliant if you are a plane spotter or meeting someone's flight early in the morning etc.

Oh I know where you mean, however, depending on wind direction does that not mean you hav eplane wheels inches above your head?

The planes do not fly over the parking place...

...the runway runs parallel to it.

Not stayed there myself... only visited... but will not hesitate to do so when I need to meet (or drop off) folk flying in or out.

Stopped there for a night last year. Lovely view over the sea, smashing beach to walk on and restaurant next door.
We enjoyed it but then, we do like aircraft.
Only downside was that the aircraft were so far away we couldn't see much of them.

Richard.

My people tell me that the Alvor site is due to close on the grounds that it is illegal!

It is just what I've been told. (My source is involved in the "Aire" business.)

Don't shoot the messenger.

I'm confused. We didn't go to an aire near Albufeira. Am I going senile?

No disrespect or personal offence intended, but an awful lot of us who live in Portugal think much the same about golf courses being everywhere you look

At least the vans aren't permanent, their users don't force up the local prices and they integrate with the rest of the community during their stay

One golf course can use as much water as ten small farms.

Acres and acres of land used up for the enjoyment of so few at any one time...

18 holes with fourball on each one (highly unlikely) 72 people... grrrrrrrrrrr

Best close them all down then and convert them to farms. That would suit me as Im not a golfer, and I've lost count of the number of times Ive been in bars and restaurants in a Portugal and had to suffer the embarrassment of sitting near a table of golfers. Most of them are on the lash, end up shouting instead of talking and get over excited as soon as they're away from her indoors.Reaching for helmet.;)

Having witnessed at first hand the total destruction of woodland, the flattening of mile upon mile of natural countryside, the wholesale destruction caused by endless building of unaffordable "golf retreats", overpriced and anodyne hotels, clubhouses and the total devastation of the natural environment, including the habitat for wildlife, and all for the sake of a handful of spoilt, alcohol sodden, badly dressed, loud "tourists" with no interest in the country they are visiting and for the profit of those who exploit their gross stupidity, I have absolutely no love at all for the crass " culture" that surrounds and ruins this otherwise respectable sport.

How many of these people actually see the country they are visiting beyond the airport? How much do they know of the noble history and rich culture of Portugal? Their diet is limited to Pizza, "English breakfasts" and frango piri piri. And those who deign to wander beyond the confines of the golf course limit their horizons to the commercialised "trip advisor" itinerary, and can't even scrape together the words to thank their hosts in their native tongue.

I can perhaps be thankful that (so far) most of this has been confined to certain parts of the south of the country, leaving Lisbon and upwards relatively unaffected.

Deep breaths needed, rant over

Understandable, they have a strong accent. She would have said "obrigada", which is the feminine :)
