Unfortunately as we predicted the end has come for Max. The vet said it was only fair to Max we end it today.
As much as he seemed content to spend all day asleep the seizures made him look very confused. All the staff at the vets were very kind and understanding.
With all the problems with my sister in laws health problems in Australia and the situation this last year my wife has taken this badly. It is going to take a lot of TLC to get past this.
Our daughter knew we were going to the vets today before she went to work but I am wondering if I should have waited until she is at home. I had to do this today when I had the courage to do this. Dragging this out any longer wouldn’t have helped me make the decision.

Am so sorry to hear about poor Max, but perhaps it was just his time. You clearly have done everything you could and gave him a loving home.
Time and support is all you can do to help your poor wife deal with the rotten time she has had. I wish you and your family all the best at this difficult time.

Thanks for you’re thoughts folks. I don’t have much contact with my sisters but it was a bit weird that my youngest sister sent me a text just after we got home asking how every one including Max was.
Like Daisy if you take on a dog as a member of the family it involves all of you when they are not well. I hope when I go I get as much sympathy as our dogs get.

So sorry to hear you had to make this hard decision. It shows how much you loved Max that you let him have a peaceful end to a very happy life.

I’ve had a few dogs over the years and would dearly love another but I just don’t think I could handle the despair and sadness that I experienced with my last dog, 16yrs is a long time to see your best friend go....

lots of dog owners on here and I read lots of happy times and also sad ones... love to see them though..

I am not sure if we are going to replace Max. It would have to be another rescue dog. We can’t visit any rescue centres without travelling at the moment so it will give us time to think.
His mat and dishes along with his treats and meal are still in the kitchen and in the motorhome. For now I want to leave them were they are. When I feel up to it I will put them away.
My sister decided a rescue dog would be a good idea. To her partners dismay she came home with two spiky haired lunatics. They caused more agro than the pedigree puppies she had before. Her lovely manicured lawn and pristine garden resembled a battle ground after a week.

Be patient. As the country opens up and people start going back to work rescue centres will be inundated with "Lockdown Pups". Dogs bought on a whim by novice owners who then find that they cannot cope and the poor dogs end up in rescue. Pedigrees as well as cross breeds. Most will need quite a lot of work re socialisation and basic training but I'm sure a lovely dog will be there for you. You will have time to grieve for Max and remember all the good times you had with him.
I find great solace from the photos of pets I've had down the years which are all over the house and even in the summerhouse where I groom the dogs. It's as if every photo brings a smile and happy memory. I feel for you in your loss.

I had planned to dig through the boxes of photos in the top of my wardrobe. It is a mess up there so it would be interesting to see the ones of the kids and our dogs.
When we cleared out my fathers house I found a collar from the collie we had when I was little. I have kept Max’s collar so it can hang in the workshop with that one.
As I said we will have to wait until April I think because the recue centre we have used before is thirty miles away.
Sorry to take over the post for Daisy I thought other dog owners would read this rather than putting in a general post.

Don't be in any rush to put Max's stuff away, it will help you grieve, My last little girl passed away 11 years ago and we still miss her of course. The Christmas before she left us she did something really silly, as she was always a clown. I had a new towbar laid out in parts to check on the kitchen floor. She wandered over to see what dad was doing and wondered off carrying a towball, about 1kg of steel. She sneaked off with it and hid it under the radiator behind the Christmas tree in the lounge. Other than dusting and hoovering, there it has stayed and I recently re-discovered it when moving Brenda's desk. It's stupid, I know, but that towball represents so much more than a lump of metal

You will see Max's stuff over time and have good memories too

She is doing as well as she can.... bless her she is so frustrated at being confined and not allowed to play, walk , run etc.

The full length dressing she had on her back leg caused her to sweat and her fur and skin were red raw... we are at the vets every 2 days getting it re-dressed but she now has a much smaller dressing to let the air get at ther upper leg (we've started calling her Drumstick....). But in order to stop her licking the raw skin, we have to put a cone on her - which she really does not like. (we have got an inflatable neck ring, but she can still reach the leg and dressing). Trying to keep the dressing dry is a palava..we have a waterfproof overboot that we have to put on her when we take her into the garden for the toilet...its a lot of faff, but necessary.

Considering all the pulling about etc., she has been really good. The vet x-rayed her foot yesterday and the fracture on her middle toe is mending but likely to result in a slight kink - it won't affect her walking, stance etc., the othe toe's are mending very well with no problems. The slight tear in the cranial crucial ligament is healing very well too. Vet reckons another 3 weeks to be safe... So thankfully looks like no need for any surgical intervention.

Pleased to hear she is healing well. We get so involved when they are poorly or injured and I think it helps with the bonding process. Poorly or injured dogs seem so much more loving afterwards, they always remember what you did for them

She is very affectionate and loves to lick and have a cuddle. I must admit I had a heck of a shock yesterday morning.... I got up early in the morning to make the coffee and take her out for a wee... So took the cone off, got the overboot to put on her leg and she wriggled to avoid it... she ended up lying in her back as I knelt over her and concentrated on trying to put the boot on and fasten the velcro ties... She however decided to be “affectionate”.... the next thing I know she stuck her nose inside my boxer shorts and licked my arse.....

Reminds me of my previous 2 staffies. We were visiting family in South Wales and took the dogs out to exercise at a local beauty spot. They were running free having a lovely time when the boy spotted a young couple being rather more than amorous in public. Before I could call him away he ran up behind them and stuck his cold nose firmly between the young lad's legs. I can remember the scream now and the girl was laughing hysterically. We apologised and moved on quickly :rofl:

Its sounds like Daisy is progressing well. How long before she is free from the dressings.
We had to make a move with the mat Max slept on this week. We normally washed it once a week but looking at it we realised how tatty it had become so we agreed to bin it. I havnt moved his bags of meal or his chews and I think his toys are still under the chair.
So far we havnt found another dog but it’s early yet and we won’t rush into anything.

Another 3 weeks according to the vet. Aside from trying to keep her calm and confined, the dressing and bandage is having to be replaced daily as it does not stay on, and not because Daisy is pulling it. The act of having to put on a waterproof covering to take her out for the toilet doesn’t help either. So rather than constant visits to the vets we have stocked up on lint, cotton padding and elastic bandages and the nurses at the vets have shown us how to reapply.

Daisy has through it all, has been really good bless her but she has now got off to a tee, the “ flop to the floor and big sigh” routine.

We are surprised how impacting it is on all of us, the time and faff around doing the simplest of things, however, we know it is time well invested to get the right outcome.

I totally understand your feelings around Max’s things... it is so hard. They all act as a positive reminder and yet also as a painful reminder. Only you will know when you feel the time is right to move, put away or dispose of things. We still have a horse rug from the first pony we ever had for our 2 girls... Jupiter passed away at the ripe old age of 32, some 20 years ago..

Again with the search for another dog, you will know when you want to make that next step.

So a great day for Daisy (and us....) after 6 long weeks, she has had her splints and bandages removed and no confinement to a pen etc.

Vet is happy, but wants her to be walked on the lead for the next 2 weeks and then will X-ray her foot. He wants her to get use to using it again. Of the 3 fractured toes, he hopes her middle toe will be OK ( fracture just below her knuckle), if she struggles when lead walking and the X-ray shows no proper heal, then she may have to have that toe removed. So let’s wait and see.....

Daisy is just so pleased to get rid of her bandages and waterproof boots, pen etc.

Great news about Daisy. The hard bit for her will be not charging about like a dog of that age should be doing.
My sisters dog had to have her dew claw removed after an accident also there was a German Shepherd with toes missing at one of the rescue centres. It didn’t seem to bother either dog. They adjust better than we do.
We still havnt found another dog. I was tempted by a young Border Collie but they said it hadnt lived in a house before. That would be too much for us to take on unfortunately. We have been close but too far down the waiting list. No matter we have time in our favour.

We had a rescue border collie many years ago.. called Bowie (1 blue eye and 1 green eye). He was 4 when we got him and he had a passion for the opening music in Eastenders... wherever he was in the house, as soon as the music started he was in front of the TV.. He was incredibly protective of the Beauty Terrorist and our kids And a fantastic addition to our family. He passed away at the age of 16.

Hopefully you will find the “one” for you, as you know dogs really choose us.

How’s Daisy getting on ?. As you may have seen from other posts we have managed to adopt another dog after a lot of form filling in and missed chances.
Paddy is settling in well and started trusting us. First motorhome trip Monday.

She is doing really thanks. Due for final X-Rays on Thursday and hopefully no need to lose her middle toe. Still desperate to go mad but only allowed 5mins off the lead each day.

We have just had a mad session with Paddy. He won’t go out without his slip lead on. Once he gets passed the door he is off up the garden. Coming back in he gets as far as the door and starts messing about. Normally a biscuit will tempt him in. Not tonight. He got half way in and ran back out. I had to put his lead back on. Two foot inside he grabbed his biscuit and ran to his bed.
What he will make of campsites and living in the van should be entertaining or challenging.

My geography is a bit vague as to Poland and Romania but they are both east of here so it’s close enough.
I had a look in Lidl for some sort of sausages as treats. I found some cocktail sausages so that will do for snacks for us and treats for Paddy.

Delighted to report that Daisy has been given the all clear and has managed to keep all her toes!

Now we will have the fun of her getting all the frustration out of her system and going a little crazy....
