Already planning nexts summers jaunts and feel inspired to go to southern half of Poland- apparently very beautiful. Will travel via Berlin and explore there first
Looking for suggestions of campsites
  • in the country with good cycle paths
  • near cities eg Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw with cycling or public transport links
will of course visit Aushwitz , so any tips here

and finally any insights on the toll system

In the absence of any specific advice, ACSI list over a hundred sites in Poland. Krakow is supposed to be worth visiting, Warsaw less so.

Krakow is indeed a beautiful city. Cultural, good food, and a visit to both Aushwitz/ Birkenau, and the salt mines are must see places. You can get organised tours to both easily in the city.
Twice a day the university do free walks, meet outside the main church for brilliant informative tours.
We thought that Krakow was one of the nicest places ever visited. Stayed in an hotel, so not sure about campsites.

5 years, feel free to ask me about the Carado!!
Well I went to all the south sights then drove up north (quite rural and pretty) to the 'wolfs lair' where there is a campsite inside it. Being a WWII anorak that's probably one of my best remembered campsites. Actually I prefered Warsaw as a city, especially 'Stalins wedding' cake which you can go to the top of and get a panoramic view of the city. Some interesting markets there also. Wroclaw is OK but a bit sterile as it was completely re-built.

Be prepared for the awful roads, many have 2 ridges along them where they have sunk under the load of buses and trucks, they were never built for the kind of traffic that is on them now. Some Polish drivers are agressive tailgaiting specialists and be prepared for a rather cool reception by the Poles as standard, and the continuous smell of alcohol on public transport. I also encountered a drunk in the middle of the road in the middle of nowhere !!!!! I personally would not go back to Poland, it's a do once place for me.

I did not pay any tolls when I went in 2013 :)

We spent a couple of weeks in Poland this year travelling from Lithuania to Germany. We paid Tolls (Viatoll) as we are 3700kg cost around £20. We used a Agroturystyka (CL style site) near Elk in the Lake District www.camping-mazury.com visited the Wolf's Lair. Passed Warsaw stayed in an ACSI www.campingwok.warszawa.pl we didn't stay having visited before. Travelled on to Kraków visited the Salt mines excellent tour would recommend PM visit very busy in the morning. We took the M/H to Auschwitz and stayed at the www.cdim.pl/en/oferta/camping a 5 minute walk from Auschwitz 1 again we would suggest a PM guided visit. We also visited the Nazi Tunnels www.osowka.pl/.
We found the Poles friendly, prices very reasonable, free WiFi widely available shopping very easy. Motorways very good and quiet other roads generally poor. The locals rarely stick to urban speed limits 50 kph. Miles of roads have double white lines for no good reason so the locals just overtake even in dangerous areas. We lost our nearside wing mirror to a white van man!!
We enjoyed our second visit to Poland and would visit again. Have a good trip.

Wow, thanks so much for your comprehensive reply and will certainly investigate. Not the first to say about mad drivers outside cities and motorways.
Did you pick up the toll in Poland or pre order a box? Not sure what the process is. We are 3850 weight

We picked up the box at the Lithuanian border crossing and dropped it off on the German side of the border post (Polish office) at Gorlitz on the E40, for the refund on the unit and unused toll. The offices weren't busy (I doubt they ever are) fortunately as paperwork is extensive all done by Viatoll staff (they don't smile) you just have to sign 8 or 10 times! They take a refundable deposit plus enough toll to cover your journey.
If you come across a toll for all vehicles on the motorway make sure to take the Viatoll lane and your box will be charged and lift the barrier for you. Our experience was that it was near impossible to navigate Poland and avoid toll roads. To access our campsite in Krakow you needed to travel on an urban motorway which was tolled.

It really is easy enough to, do all part of the trip.

Thank you for both these recommendations. What was your experience of the toll system, please?

Our van is only 3,200 in weight, so we did not have to use the via toll system. We just paid the toll when we moved from Wroclaw to Krakow which was very cheap. Cannot remember exactly but in the region of £5. This was the only toll road we used. The main roads were fine and we travelled right up to Gdansk.

Since July 2013 but been camping for 25+ years
We've just come back from a circular tour that took in the beautiful old town of Torun (Rotterdam - Berlin - Torun - Prague - Koln - Amsterdam) and would certainly go again. We found the people very friendly and the fuel and food/drink very very cheap. Roads were better than I was expecting, and the autobahn from Germany actually got better as we went into Poland (very boring straight road from Berlin to Poznan). A lot of people speak English, which was, again, something I was a little worried about. I would certainly go again

(We were in Torun for the 21st Meeting of 2CV friends, but were in the motorhome instead!)

We drove from the Baltic down to Wroclaw and through to Prague. Fascinating country. With friendly people.

Most road and drivers were great. Some rural roads very poor. Will definitely return and explore more, especially around the southern mountain ranges.
