We are booked on the Plymouth to Santander ferry ( Brittany ferries Pont Aven ship ) and wondered if anyone knows whether there is mains hook-up available or can you run the fridge freezer on gas during the crossing to keep it cold during the 20+ hrs crossing ?

Can't run gas, all gas has to be switched off.
I have heard others say that EHU can be available, it is for refrigerated trucks, but I have never seen any motorhomes plugged in.
We just pack the fridge with freezer blocks, frozen milk cartons etc and never had a problem.
Not supposed to be taking any perishable food products anyway!

I've had EHU on the Cap Finistere when we took the caravan to Spain on the Portsmouth to Bilbao route .
I just asked and they sent the ships sparky down to connect me to the EHU socket

Won’t most perishable foodstuff in the fridge be confiscated upon arrival anyway?
Like Delmar says, buy in Spain at the first available location.

Is frozen counted as perishable. We often pre make meals and freeze them. Chicken curry, Bolognese sause, Chilli, - would that be persihable? Can't see them rummaging through your freezer anyway.

Neither can I.
I don’t know about frozen foodstuffs although if it contains the banned ingredients then perhaps.

It depends who you speak to. I have had hook up on the Cap Finistere and the Pont Aven but some of the workers have a “non” attitude.

If one says no, find another and show him/her your hook up cable.

If you ask for EHU, you are implying you want to run a fridge.
If you are running a fridge it would imply you may be importing dairy or meat foodstuffs into the EU.

Therefore unless you want all your food confiscated (including your sandwiches for lunch), I'd not think about asking for EHU, and I'd not run the fridge.

Unless of course you package all your food into sealed cardboard boxes marked with a big red cross and with a label, in several languages, saying "Medicines, keep refrigerated" however this may attract the interest of the Spanish Customs for other reasons, so make sure you don't pack a kilo of flour or sugar, otherwise you may be in Santander port some hours longer than intended.

Don't think they are really interested with food products we are carrying.Too many vaccination and test certificates to check.BUSBY.

That is why we have the inverter. The batteries will soon charge up once you get on the road

Do you just leave fridge on 12 v or turn it off . Does it not drain the battery if left on for 24 hours or more?
Thought 12 volt only worked when ignition is on. The 12 volt supply is from the vehicle battery not the leisure..BUSBY.

No. Separate 12v system for leisure batteries. However, our compressor fridge is fed from the leisure batteries but does not need the 12v switched on for it to work. (y)

They didn't even check that with us. All customs wanted to know about was pets, no pets = on our way. I really think the sandwich thing was a media stunt.

When we were allowed to take food we did the two night crossing. Our freezer compartment was full of pre frozen meals plus a few sausages. I then froze 2 x 2 litre cartons of milk. The rest of the fridge had butter and the remains of “home” fridge, don’t like waste. Ours is a 3 way fridge so was off. We arrived in Bilbao. Milk was partially defrosted so OK to use but freezer compartment was still rock solid.

You would be fine but you shouldn’t be taking food. That’s a different argument of course!
