I forgot to say, when I brimmed it in Woodbridge it was with Shell super duper V power diesel.. don't normally buy it, but went into a pump with no other choice.. .. .. so gave it a treat ..

so perhaps the V power diesel does improve MPG ..
We average around an extra 10 mpg using Shell V Power diesel which offsets the extra cost & our older engine definitely ran smoother & quieter but the difference is not so noticeable on our newer ones.

Since I pumped up the tires on the motor home I am getting better mpg. I was using on a good day 9.6 liters per 100 kilometers, now I am using 8.3 per 100 K

We've recently come back from a month in France and, after seeing this thread, I worked out our mpg.

Despite SWMBO thrashing it around the M25 in both directions on the way to Eurotunnel and back at 80+ mph, plenty of Motorway driving in the UK and France around 70 mph and dozens of narrow lanes in low gear in France we managed just over 27 mpg.

That's with a Fiat Ducato 150hp engine, around 20,000 miles on the clock by the time we got home and just over 1,500 miles of travelling.

Dearest diesel was €1.119 a litre and cheapest €1.020 a litre.

if Google maths are correct that equates to an improvement from 29 to 34 mpg ?

impressive..

provided you haven't over inflated, as that will wear the centre or the tread down which would cost more in the long run with reduced tyre life, may also reduce the grip, increase braking distance.. and ... ride may also be harsher

I use Fuelio app to accurately log consumption - since having @dave newell lvs cruise fitted, mpg has definitely improved (y).
Which means I have a heavy foot :(.

Anyway, 2004 2.3 JTD pulling a 3.4 tonne brick - best 33mpg, average though is 27mpg.

I would have thought so but recently fuelled up with premium diesel and my mpg nosedived.

I made the brimming mistake with mine when I first bought it. I filled it to cuttoff and then at the next fill did my calculations. Problem is, after the first cuttoff, if I'm very, very patient I can get another 40-50 litres in :) It takes a full 10 minutes, so for me, seeing the fuel there in the neck its the only way to know for sure the actual mpg.
Blimey Jim,
That's about a tankful for me!!Having said that the new transit always seems to spill the first half litre on the ground, don't know why!!

Wind resistance increases by 36% from 60 mph to 70 mph ( proportional to the velocity squared ).
Thats really interesting. I race around at 70 on motorways to make the most of my time while working but it looks like a considerable saving can be made on fuel just by driving more carefully when I have more time. I cant wait to retire!!

If you can remember 2.815 you won't need "Google maths" km/litres X 2.815 = mpg.

Our 99 2.8 Fiat Hymer would give us 26-28 when towing a 2t trailer. Excellent (y)

I get about 18 when towing with the RV, so more than happy.
I thought , that ALL US RVs not just the bus size ones, did 6 to the gallon , it was like, compulsory and petrol at that.

Funny that! Mine did exactly the same.
I filled with Carrefour super duper stuff at Cite Europe on a previous trip and my mpg dropped for the next couple of days.
Once I refilled with cheapo fuel all was restored to the usual 26 ish mpg.

Unfortunately I still have half a tank in after filling up in Luxembourg but it'll be down soon and I'll get it as low as possible before I put the cheap Asda fuel in.

Getting Better
I have tried the supposedly "superior" diesel by mistake, and I also "think" it sounds like the engine is running a little smoother, but I have my doubts that it is anything but psychological as I haven't compared it scientifically[/QUOTE]

I think my car/van runs much better when washed and polished....(y)

Could there be some truth in that?
When the vehicle is clean and shiny the air will pass over the bodywork with less resistance. Would that make a measurable difference to performance and therefore mpg?
Perhaps some of the clever people on here might have a scientific answer.

Richard.

yes.. that is why they wash and polish aircraft ..

but with a motorhome or car.. I doubt there is a significant measurable increase

Tied van out (2007 PVC Relay 2.2 LWB) on trip to Germany-70 mph on motorways(total 1500 miles ) about 1 hr crawling in traffic jam and pottering around.Got just short of 33 mpg, very pleased with that I think anything over 30 mpg average is good on any van if not "thrashing " motor.

I'm a newbie, did have a Caravan about 8 years ago.
Ours goes a hundred miles to each quarter tank mark on the gauge, never fails , motorway , country roads , in traffic, anything always start looking for diesel at 360 miles, and useualy we fill around 380, never fails , don't know what miles to the gallon it is as iv never checked after the first few fills and then it was about 28 mpg

Mine is about the same a 100 miles to each division on fuel gauge, I have a 2ltr HDI non turbo 3000kg and I reckon as you about 28 to gallon. I drive at about 50mph on twisty's and 60 to 65 on good roads.

I keep a good record of fuel usage and on our 2.8 JTD Hymer 584 (2003) I usually get between 26 and 28 mpg using bog std diesel. This is done over 6 plus fills to iron out the differences in fill levels. In France I avoid peage motorways unless I'm trying to reduce time or stay off uphill/ down hill roads such as Riom to Brive which really does hit the mpg figures. I do use the free ones though.
My grandchildren taxi (Kia Sedona 2.9 auto Diesel) does about 27mpg so can't complain about the Hymer.

I use this to do all my calculations, quick and easy and free to download. Been averaging around the 25.18mpg. Best is 34.91mpg and a worse of 22.12mpg due to high winds and loads of traffic :)

2.8JTD Autotrail Dakota with 27000 miles on the clock. Love the vehicle, to me it's simply perfect :)
