A fellow Funster, Bobby, pm'd me kindly offering advice as I am organising a 'meet' in Fife. He helpfully suggested putting an @ sign before their name and posting it on my thread. This I have done but I have no idea how this helps nor what @ actually does.
Can you clever people offer some advice to a techno dinosaur

By putting an @ like @normanandsue gives that person an alert so they know that they have been mentioned in a post.

@Jim you need to put a space if you choose from a list after typing a few letters of their name first.

Thanks @Jim, I think I understand, but as always if I don't I know my cyber friends will rush to my assistance.
Thanks everyone for your help, Sue and I are just about to set off to the last of @irnbru Scottish meets in Caithness next weekend.

The list appears with or without a space, if you are just typing a name and ignore the list make sure there is no space after or it will not parse the name
