I have just been caught on a scam I thought only other people would be caught out with.............. Last night we got home from my daughters ( so had a couple of wines ) and thought that as we are now not able to take our M.H. out, I would be smart and S.O.R.N. it. I went online, as it had to be done before the 1st, so confidently carried the SORN out and was pleased with myself........ UNTIL.......... this morning I had a look in my account to find that I have now paid £37.50 to SORN REGISTER SERVICES.... this shower have a website almost identical to the DVLA site and they register you for a cost, then do exactly what you would do on the official site.

I am absolutely furious that I was taken in for this.

Please, if you do try and do a SORN make sure that you don't get mixed up with these thieving B.....ds.

You didn't see my warning then

I thought a timely reminder to those not fully aware.
Make sure you use the official .UK
GOV Site currently popping up up in about 5th place in a Google search.
The top 4 are usually the private form filling scammers that will simply pass on your form on your behalf FOR A FEE. Circa £45-£65 a time
It's legal scamming and you wont get your cash back without a fight and some luck.
SORNING A VEHICLE IS FREE
THERE ARE NO FEES PAYABLE ON.GOV SITES.

I don't think strictly speaking it's a scam. It says by using their services you are agreeing to their terms and conditions and they are not affiliated in any way with DVLA or GOV.UK

Annoyingly dishonest though using the same layout as the government site. A Funster nearly fell for it a couple of days ago and started a thread about it. Never mind it's only a few quid and you won't do that again 👍

Maybe ask the department of transport why they allow 3rd parties to operate like this. Also highlight it to Martin Lewis website and bbc you and yours maybe just maybe this could be stopped

Coolcats, thanks for the ideas....... will give it a go, however, don't hold my breath, must be loads of people caught out.

I don't want to rain further on your parade but make sure that you were definitely SORNed yesterday otherwise you'll be liable for November's tax too.

If you are using Google, not just for SORN but also things like driving licence, power of attorney etc you will usually find that the first 3 or 4 results have "AD" next to them, this will show that it is not the official website.

Try using Bing instead and that will take you to the official websites without the ads/scammers

Minksy..... thanks for your help, just been on line and my vehicle is still taxed, so as well as charging me £37.50, these ar......s have cost me another months tax........... Grrrrrrrrr

In which case you might have a case to get your fee back as they haven't done what you paid them to do.

Does Bing work better and filter responses to a search?
Thanks, genuine question, not looking for a disagreement on which search engine to use.

I always used to use Google, for some strange reason I think that is better than Bing, but after watching "Rip off Britain" a few weeks ago about these websites that "scam" you I have started to use Bing but only because I found that they don't put Ads at the top of their search. How or why this works I don't know but can only surmise that Google take money from these scammers to have their ads at the top of the search

i want to know how they come up above the official gov websites in the search? Are they paying google for top spot?

I am lead to believe that these sharks pay Google and are then upgraded above the official sites........ lets go back to letters and telegrams, we knew where we were then and that the world was not allowed in to cheat..... maybe I'm just an old fart

Rather than Bing, use DuckDuckGo - it uses Bing behind the scenes, but has better privacy / tracking protection. You can set it as your default search engine in most browsers, even on iOS/iPhone.

All to easy and all to frequent. Been close many times.
The worrying thing is it could so easily happen for £1000s as just a few £1s
I don't/wont SORN any of my vehicles.
Wish you luck getting your dosh back.

Prob cheaper for you if you did use the scam sites

I SORNed my van back in May, then had to retax it to sell it 4th July. I still haven't had my refund back despite having phoned them 5 times and on the 5th phone call being told that as I sold it withing 10 days of taxing it, the refund wasn't automatic and had to be done manually, she said it would still take another 3-4 weeks for the cheque to arrive, that was 5 weeks ago, going to phone them again today. :pinocchio: :(
