I am starting to get fed up with only having digital copies of my photos. When I last changed my printer I went for a reasonably good photo printer but I tend to take my pictures, copy them to the PC, check them, and then store them. I very rarely print them off and certainly not as a matter of course.

So what do the rest of you do? Do you take the memory card into one of the many outlets that have 'self print' machines and do it that way?

Does anyone use an on-line phote printing service?

Do you print them at home?

Or do you just store them on your PC and never print them off?

I think I am fancying the online print service myself but the last time I looked it was quite expensive but that was some time ago...

I too miss the enprints and contact prints, I have over 2000 sets of B&W negatives and probably 3000 colour. That's a lot of contact prints and storage. I rarely developed colour myself so I have zillions of enprints. They are stored and rarely looked at but when we do get them out there is nothing quite like a photograph to bring memories flooding back.

If one of my great grandchildren were to stumble across the stored photographs I am sure they would enjoy them, however in 75 years time if they come across some CDs full of photographs they will probably not be able to see them as they will have nothing to "play" the CD on, and even if they do the CD's will probably be unreadable as they just do not last very long.

Even digital prints do not last anywhere like the old developed and fixed variety. Digital is fantastic and I couldn't go back to stinking of fixer, but sometimes I wonder whether the convenience of digital is worth it in the long run.

I was a very keen amateur photographer with my own dark room. I'd spend hours getting a print just the way I wanted it. Nowadays I rarely bother doing much more than cropping an image. The vast majority of images are stored on hard disks but only a few get printed out but those that are printed are very special to us.

HI

You do wonder some times don't you. I am photographing a wedding tommorrow. I will take 500 - 1000 photographs. By the time I finished download, sorting, correcting, uploading to the internet, via 3G et. etc. I will be so tired of them I won't want to sit and enjoy looking at prints of them.

In the film days I would be expected to take 60 shots and they would be proof printed to 5"x5", having been taken on a square format Hasselblad. I would look forward to seeing the results. I had a superb darkroom for hand printing both colour and black and white. It was in the cellar and was sound proof - fantastic

I use a colour-matched laser copier for ours.

Only select pictures get printed.

I Used to work for Kodak and Canon setting up printers for proofing Material in graphics studios.

The trouble with digital is, it costs nothing to take a picture, and store it.

When you had to pay for film, and for developing, people were, or tended to be, more selective and precise in the images they took. They were almost always dissapointed with the returned result.

The advantage is, nowadays, with digital, you can be selective about which pictures you choose to print,Manipulating them through software, and just archive the rest.:thumb:

I take masses of digital photos (well for me anyway about 300 on recent weekend in Rome) I print a selection from my Canon Printer, then work on some of the others I want to see in Print. The rest in the file stay on file but I also make a dvd disc every so often and also copy to an external hard disc so I always have 2 versions off the computer. I can then delete some of the files after some months to free space on the hard disc.

I find the combination of printing by my own canon printer, (iP4300), what I want straight away and copying to disc or hard disc give me space and time to look at whats there

When we're away for our six months winter sojourn I take digital, load them onto the computer (and/or CD), then when we get decent Internet upload the best to the Orange photo service (Photobox) and have them sent to family. It's remarkably cheap.

Keeps them in touch and when we visit on return nice to see physical photos.

In my opinion it is cheaper and less hassle to use one of the online printing services, I do it about once a year, I check round to see who has the best price at the time. Aldi, Snapfish, Tesco, etc, etc. My brother is a professional photographer with a great printer, but even he goes to a specialist print shop for big orders.

Most of mine stay on the computer (with a CD copy as backup). Used to take loads of photos with the old film based cameras but they ended up in boxes and never looked at so this is just a modern version of the shoe boxes.
I have started to download some photos

Two or three from each ‘outing’ are downloaded onto the IPod to show friends.

I have a programme on the computer that allows me to make up a slide show and again I add a small selection from each outing so that I can then produce a disc that can be shown on the TV via the DVD player. Normally put this on when its raining or feeling fed up.

If away from a week or two I always used to send postcards to family now I will go into a high street printers and if they can print onto photo paper that is plain on the reverse side (no company logos etc) I will run off a few prints and use the plain side as a postcard with address and short wish you were here message. Means they get a personalised postcard.
