as my mh was bought as a stolen recovered I had to wait 6 weeks for the registration documents to come before I could tax it, finally managed to get it taxed and took it for a spin, ran really well but when I came to put it back on the driveway I could not get it into reverse, took a while but finally got in reversed onto the drive but could not get it out of gear, took it to a garage that specialised in gearboxs, turns out the gearbox was full of water, all bearings seized & selectors seized in other words gearbox is shot and will need rebuilding, I'm told this is a common fault with Peugeot that water running out of the grill gets on to the gearbox, is there a way of stopping this happening as not a cheap repair, don't want to have to do again. Regards Mike

Correct, water from the scuttle runs through the drain tubes, which are too short, directly onto the gearbox.
The fix is a modified drain tube which is longer and drains down the back of the box.
It's not just Peugeot, it's all sevel vans.
Fiat, Peugeot and Citroen.
Main dealer should have the parts.

Thanks Pappajohn I will have to pay a visit to the dealer a pick one up, might also be a good idea to get a full cover for the winter.

If you mean a full van cover they can do more bodywork damage than its worth.
in the wind they can flap about and rub on bodywork causing scuffs and scratch's.
Anything on the roof with sharpish corners, sat dish, solar panel etc, could rub through the cover.
They can also cause condensation problems inside.
The new drain pipes should prevent further gearbox problems.

I have similar van Tranny engine .Make sure there is a plastic cover over top of cyl head and as said extend drain pipes from scuttle try to open holes to adapt a larger drain pipe I used cut off mastic tube nozzles .Also stick scuttle to windscreen as this is where most water comes from, use a good adhesive though.

many many years! since I was a kid
another water issue under the bonnet is if the drainhole blocks, the scuttle can overflow straight onto the fuse & relay box. belt & braces, but a rubber floormat draped over the fusebox works perfectly

rerouting the drain away from the gearbox can be done cheaply with a length of plastic tubing added to the original and routed away using cable ties
both jobs 30 minutes and under £10

plenty of gearboxes at breakers yards much cheaper than reconditioning one
