To many to mention
Son in law has just got back from caravan holiday and his generator fell over in the caravan spilling some petrol on the carpet. Anyone and ideas how to get rid of the smell of petrol and the stain on the carpet.

Found this on google
Sop up as much of the gasoline as possible with an old towel or newspaper.

Pour baking soda or kitty litter on the area to draw the gas out of the carpet
Let the baking soda or litter sit on the carpet for three to four hours before using a vacuum cleaner or shop-vac to clean it up.

Mix a solution of 1 qt. warm water to 2 tbsp. Dawn dish soap.
Use a medium bristle brush to scrub the carpet to clean out any residual gas from the carpet and eliminate any stains.
Allow the carpet to dry completely and repeat the process if any stain or lingering smell remains.

That is really hard. Over time it will all evaporate and the smell will go. But how long? I can't think of an easy solution but surely someone will be along soon to offer advice.....

Edit Irnbru just did! (y)

Change the carpet. Otherwise I suspect it will smell of petrol for ever.

Be careful when using the vacuum. If it's mains, the spark from the motor armature will ignite the vapour!

Greetings,

I was going to suggest pet enzyme cleaner but then I realised that after pouring petrol on the carpet, there won't be any germs for the cleaner to get at. Doh!!!

febreeze or oust will kill the smell, but make sure you keep any pets away from the sprayed area for 48 hours

as for soaking up a petrol spill, fullers earth or cat litter will safely absorb it

dont forget to leave a skylight in the van open to ventilate any vapours
