Just wondering, who and how many of you have Petrol cars with LPG conversions.

With your findings and recommendations for a Good Dealer up in the NW somewhere please?

Ask Any Questions as to why I am thinking of converting?

We had a Renault Kangoo fitted with a system for about 10ys. Was more economical but we did have a problem with the cylinder heads which required a repair (under warranty) we then fitted Flash lube as well to prevent this recurring (so overall probably didn't save us that much). I have heard that the newer systems are better...

Probably only really viable if you are talking a big old gas guzzler or a serious amount of mileage got me curious though

ive had two lpg vehicles - loved them both - really economical for larger engines. my daughter also had a fiat 500 (already converted) who also reduced her running costs - yes even on a 1 litre engine.

I found that polish engineers knew more about the systems than uk engineers - my daughter had an issue with hers and it took 3 uk garages with 'lpg' engineers before we went to a polish one who knew how to resolve what was a simple issue, so I would def consider finding one close to you.

flash lube is used on older engines so a newer one shouldn't need it - but the garage who does the conversion will be able to identify if its needed or not.

with lpg, as there is no carbon build up, then the engine should outlast petrol/diesel engines.

there was a minor issue on one car with the engine warning light, in that the sensors don't recognise the car is burning fuel much cleaner and it can produce an orange warning light - but don't panic!

also when taking for an mot, just make sure you have lpg in the tank and that the engine is warm enough for the lpg to 'kick in' - works brilliant if you've had issues on emissions previously !!!!

Many years ago we had a Citroen xantia and also a Vauxhall Astra both came out the factory as dual fuel and great cars, but you get a bit stressed when it went on petrol. Bob.

I had a Ford Galaxy converted to lpg when new which proved economical over the few years of ownership, I also had two RVs converted one of which is in my avatar , which again was economical and worthwhile but the reducing numbers of lpg stations was becoming a problem.

We had a Vauxhall Vectra converted to LPG and we got our money on the cost of the conversion in less than 18 month. We sold it on to a young lady who commuted into London as it was exempt of the congestion charge.

I remember when one team entered LPG powered Ford Focus's in the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) but they were soon banned as they keep winning race.

Okay why do you want the conversion?

If you decide to have a vehicle converted I can recommend Autogas2000 just outside Thirsk.

Friend has a range rover converted by Autogas 2000, excellent job.

My Dodge ram was converted when I bought it, with a large LPG tank in the bed. Cost around £100 to pull a fifth wheel outfit from Benidorm to Liverpool. Never had any issues with the LPG only a dash warning light coming on occasionally as the engine management system did not recognise the LPG system.
Am seriously thinking of a big old gasser Merc as an everyday car at the moment.

if you have a car converted to lpg does this effect your road tax in anyway

thanks

Thank You.

I have an Old S500 V8 Mercedes I use for long trips (Spanish Express). I think we will keep that on Petrol

I have just bought an Old Mercedes ML500 V8 to replace our Audi A2 TDi. We also have a Two Toyota Previas.

I know a few people who have had / have LPG cars, most say they do not have issues. One of my Friends even had a filler Pipe fitted to his Domestic LPG Tank to get even cheaper gas. That was an old ML500 too.

Speaking to our Industrial gas supplier down in Kidsgrove (David Smithson). He has a big Yank V8 on gas. He says it runs a dream on LPG.

I hear V8 Hemi Engines are the best for LPG. But I don't like the UK Cars that have the Engine (Jeep Chrysler).

David Smithson recommended a garage down in Fenton "CarGas". Broken Link Removed Speaking to them, they want £1200 for the Previa which they say run no problem on Gas and £2,000 for the ML500.

We have three Garages selling LPG near us Shell 80p a litre - Cheshire gas 58p. And lots more around inc one near us in Spain.

Had a Jeep Cherokee 4L fitted with lpg

Got fed up with the time it took to fill with gas, usable range of about 220 miles, having to find filling stations and the tank was in the vehicle restricting 'boot' space.

I drive a V8 petrol now - would not consider converting even to save money - too much trouble

We no longer use the tunnel due to the Logistics of getting there.

Just booked Hull-ZeeBrugge £39 + Cabin for three less 10% Discount going out £123.30 3 Adults 7m L x 2.6m H Motorhome

More expensive coming back by £100, but still better than the Run to Folkestone and the Migrants issues.

98 Miles up the M62. Pleasant, relaxed Sailing, I wake up refreshed, not hassled, wired after the M60, M56 A556, M6, M40/M1, M25, M26/M20 Routine.

Tunnel for us everytime, at 46 or so quid per crossing plus the easy to ammend booking for frequent travellers !! But it doesnt suit everyone

We had a Merc with a professionally fitted conversion and it gave us more trouble than it was worth!! Looked very nice but started playing up ans car kept cutting out, in the end I took it our local Merc agents, it took them a month to sort it out at great expense and they gave it back saying "leave the LPG alone and don't use it" so we got rid of it asap.

Might start steeling fuel instead.

I was working at a petrol station the other day.

An Asian taxi driver pulled in, put £17 in the tank and drove off without paying.

I asked the cashier.

Why only put a small amount in and then drive off. In a taxi with plates on too?.

She said, they do it because they think we won’t Persue then for a small amount,

When the police arrive. They claim it was brother or son who took car. Someone cloned plates, etc.

There are many cases where they don’t get their money.

When pushed, she said it’s only Asians that do it !.

There's the GAS Autocentre in Huddersfield, hopefully converting mine soon.

I had a 960 Volvo converted about 2000 and ran it for 5ish years up to about 150k it went great no hassle at all with the lpg side but it used to chew the (vw sourced) coil packs. it then sold very quickly because it was LPG.

The biggest hassle I had with it was the pillocks who park in front of the gas tank while they did their shopping, and went to the loo etc. But to be fair it had a smallish doughnut tank in the spare wheel well so needed frequent fillups.
