newbie, but was caravanner for 20 years
Short of going to a weigh station (which I guess I might have to do) I am trying work out what my payload is. I have a fiat ducato base ace, which has a plate under bonnet stating max gross weight is 3400kg, but not the actual (empty) weight, so I have no idea what my payload is. I am lead to believe it is about 675kg, but it might be an expensive mistake to assume this is correct and then get stopped. Any advice gratefully received.

On and off for many years.
The only way to find out is to get it weighed I'm afraid.

We do ours at the start of every year. Load it up in "take off" mode, half full of water, full of fuel, bikes, food, clothes, kayaks, all the other clobber which gives us a good idea of what we have to spare.

'tis he only accurate way :)

Seems odd that you buy something that isn`t necessarily fit for purpose though. Surely you should get a clear(ish) indication of what you can carry. My wife and I weigh about 140kg together, I suppose that has to be counted, then water, diesel? etc. What would you guys feel my payload could be, roughly?

Sorry to repeat but all the guessing and all the handbooks in the world are useless there's only one way to find out. Its half an hour and a tenner.

Whatever the payload stated originally in any brochure or by manufacturers can be totally wrong.
If you have bought a used van you may not be aware or think about all the add on's that previous owners have fitted.
Get in, go to weight station and see where you are,,, As long as you are under 3400kg you are legal..
Then anything you add in must be accounted for...
Be nice if you came back with a result to help others who may read this later.. (y)

I have found this, could it be reliable?

No. Manufacturers have only very recently agreed on what constitutes an advertised payload. Subsequent owners my have added awnings, solar, extra batteries etc. The only way is to weigh. (y)

Consider what the dealer told you it had and reduce by at least half and you might be close

It's not just total weight either. It is weight distribution on each axle. The only way as said is a weigh bridge.

Oh no they wont....
To me it looks like this....
Original van was 3200kg
Following Swift modification to a motorhome it is rated at 3400kg..
Ref the log book and 3500kg and no weight plate to state that, then I am going to say an error on it's registration. So might be worth getting that looked in to...

Agreed....

3200kg plate = first build (factory)
3400kg plate = second build (converter)
3500kg V5 = dealer error at first registration.

Many 7500kg RVs are wrongly registered at 3500kg because the registering dealer didnt have a clue as to true weight and possibly no idea how to fill in the documentation.
