Hi to all,
We sold our Autotrail Cheyenne a few weeks ago and have placed a deposit on a new to us motorhome from a dealer which is due for pick up in a few weeks time, after reading the Terms and conditions we noticed that the balance must be paid in full 48 hours prior to pick up. Is this normal practice ?

Surely you would want to do a final view before paying the full amount, we had a deposit at SMC recently with the option not to purchase upon viewing should the vehicle not suit, we notified the bank the day before a large transaction would be going through and did the transaction immediately after the viewing, have the handover and drove away that day.

Do NOT hand your hard earned over before you are 100% sure all the i's are dotted and t's crossed.

Unfortunately you have a signed contract. It would be normal to quote "cleared funds" "which I guess is what they are doing.
There is nothing stopping you from viewing the vehicle before you pay then transfer and pick it up 2 days later.

Some dealers have that in their terms but don’t apply it if the funds can be cleared at handover. Have a word with the dealer.

As many have said, get the handover done, if all is well, check registration docs/service records carefully, check out any warranty T&C's that the dealer is offering, then do the live bank transfer at the dealership with the sales rep. They may say our norm is to have funds in place 48 hours before handover, but just tell them many of us on here would never agree to doing that before completely happy with its condition on the collection day.
Good luck, hope all goes well for you, but whatever way it goes, dont forget to put some comments on the "Dealer Review" section of MH Fun as it helps others make decisions to purchase via them, or not, as the case may be.

We've never done it however as it's not new if you pay it in person, cash or debit card, then you can get the dealer to immediately register it in your name so you own it at that point, for new it's more difficult.

In an ideal world we would both travel to view but due to our location Scotland and the dealers location south of England ( deposit was placed before border crossing allowed again ), we placed a deposit based on there honesty and a video viewing, one of us will fly down to pick up the MH when its ready and can only hope as described or we will be fighting to reclaim our deposit which was 10 percent of cost. We have done our research on the dealers and all seems legitimate with decent reviews.

Did this when buying my Wildax.
Despite the nightmare scenarios often expressed... all went very smoothly on the day.
Fair enough, what would you have done if the van you bought had untraceable finance outstanding and the dealer who sold it didn't own the vehicle outright?

Conveniently the terms and conditions came through by email after 10 percent deposit paid, We were going to contact the dealer anyway regarding this as not something that we have ever done before, ie pay before pick up, was just curious if it was normal practise.

Marquis required this when we bought this van (not new). I wasn’t keen, but thought with such a large dealership it would be ok, & it was.

I wouldn't part with any more money till I've looked the van over top to bottom inside out. The worse they can do is keep your deposit. But if you give them everything then you'll be in a not so good position. If you discover something you're not happy with you might be able to get something knocked off. Ask on here things you might need to look for in the particular mh that you're looking to buy. That way you'll already have an idea of any specific faults to look for. Also you could email the dealer and tell them you're not happy to pay the balance before seeing the mh in the flesh. They will probably say not to worry about it and that you can pay when you complete the deal.

We've done it twice now with new vans buying from a main dealer and paying in full the day before driving away and we haven't had any issues.

I am more than happy to supply the dealers name to help ourselves and other possible buyers who may purchase or use there services if this is seen as appropriate?

Don't worry about the T&C's they only become useful if you end up in court and at this stage everyone trusts each other, to a point.

Fly down, inspect, if all is good then transfer the money, wait..... pick up keys and head Norf.

If you had to wait 1 more night at a cost of say £60 in a Travel Inn wouldn't that be worth it ?

In which case insist on paying on collection, until you see it 'in the flesh' you really don't know if it is exactly as described, not because of any purposeful deception by the dealership, but things can be missed. They would be being very unreasonable if they insisted you pay upfront as there is not reason to do so on a second hand vehicle at all.

Not a chance would I pay before I had the keys. Yours wouldn't be the first to be ready to go and someone has pranged it there on the forecourt. If you've paid by then, its more your problem than theirs.

Make sure that you have added them as a payee at your bank, and that you are able to pay in full on the day. Make sure you are collecting on a week day. Assure them you will pay on the day.

Our dealer (Geoff Cox) refused to take the balance of the payment before collection.

The day of handover we went through the van (and it was a special factory order which makes the legal side more complex I am informed) and when we were happy went into the office to pay using debit card. We'd notified the bank beforehand so there was no delay in the payment being checked and cleared when they did the security check.

A few years earlier we bought a second hand van from a dealer in Livingston and, again, it was debit card on handover day. The deposit on that one was paid by credit card as the total cost was below the Section 75 limit.

I put a deposit on a new to us mh back in February without actually seeing it. We went to collect yesterday because of lockdown restrictions. Myself and the dealer had a slight difference of perspective on my part exchange so to say and there was a little bit of renegotiation. I had to stick to my guns regarding deal over phone and was prepared to walk away. Fortunately the dealer was flexible shall we say and our deal was done. They did send me a welcome pack, but i never filled or signed anything till the day.

I wouldn’t pay before I was happy with it, and I wouldn’t sell one until I had the money, surely it can all be done at the same time.

The contract was made when you paid the deposit. They can't add terms and conditions after.

We paid in full before it left the factory in Germany, when it landed in the UK it was registered in our name and we picked up 6 weeks later due to Covid restrictions, we did get photographs though "I called it the adopt a MORELO scheme"

A bit twitchy but that is what we signed up to other than we should have driven to Germany for it but not allowed.

Also if you pay upfront, it's legally yours.

Then it can be sat on the forecourt uninsured.

No way Jose.

We can all come up with "what ifs".
Your example, even after handover, you could be stuffed by a chattel mortgage.

Plus, these days even if you paid in full before discovering its a bag of nails, thanks to consumer legislation, you have right to reject.

Yes, it could be a concern but provided you've done your due diligence on the dealership, it's not one that would overly concern me.

we needed to pay the balance a few days up front whn we bought ours from a dealer in Germany - mainly to do withthe added complication of making an overseas transaction....and being unable to do a pre-collection visit.
that being said, if i were buying from a UK dealer and they insisted on csh before collection, i would make a trip beforehand to run through it before collecttion - and settle the balance once happy, then go and collect

We did a test transfer of £1 in advance and checked that the dealer had received it to ensure there were no issues.

Exactly ... also distance selling rules may come into play.
