Our Passports were issued on the 2/5/2012 so they expire on 2//5/2022
Were of to Spain on the 4th Jan 22 and returning on the 2nd April 22
do we need to renew them before we go since they'll still have a month on them when we return

6 months unexpired 'life' of passport needed, and suggested that you allow 10 weeks for the passport renewal to be processed. For completeness, the Passport cannot be more than 10 years old, so any extra months at last renewal [my passport had 10 yrs 9 mths validity from 2015] are discounted for the purpose of the '6 months unexpired' Rule

Yes renew, as Steve says, you won’t have the required six months left. We renewed ours back a few months ago online and had them back within one week, great service.

Why we have this law still in force is rather strange, as we cannot stay longer than 90 days anyway.

yes renew although I thought I read recently that spain had reduced the 6 months to 3 but even though, yours need renewing.

Passport validity​

Check your passport is valid for travel before you book your trip, and renew your passport if you do not have enough time left on it.

Make sure your passport is:

• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave France, or any other Schengen country
• less than 10 years old

The 3 months you need when leaving a country must be within 10 years of the passport issue date.

If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the minimum 3 months needed.

Possibly so you can be extridited back to that country if any legal matters arise at a future date.

Just read that passports of people from outside the EU, must have three months left on their passports, beyond the date of exit. Things are moving on.

I Renewed both of my passports on Tuesday at the Newport office getting ready for some travel later in the year because I had 3 months left on one and less than six on the other . I was expecting a few weeks to process given the continued easing of travel restrictions. Well blow me they were both delivered on Thursday. How’s that for service.

If you have residency or a visa you can stay longer but the passport rules still apply.
