BEWARE new Passport renewals. I have just been online to look up about renewing my passport as I had a text from the passport office about renewing it.
What they do not tell you is that they no longer ad on the amount left on the old passport. My passport runs out in July, if I applied now my new passport will run from the date issued for ten years, so I would loss about 5 to 6 months. This change was sneeked in in September last year.

I think you'll find its to do with Brexit and countries not accepting passports that have more than 10 years validity.

Its been like this since September 2019. Martin Lewis highlighted it and we had a good old moan then including me.
Having said that despite being fully aware of it we were nearly caught out because I had completely forgotten that Nick’s passport was renewed 2 years early because “someone“ accidentally washed his old one after he got back from a works trip to Italy many moons ago. I suddenly remembered whilst we were in Beni before Christmas and if we’d crashed out with a no deal on the 31st of Oct his would not have been OK in France. Oh how I laughed ( no I didn’t but he did and I will NEVER be allowed to forget it ).

Renewed promptly on our return home in December that’s for sure! I had been so meticulous about green cards, IDPs just in case. Far too smug for my own good.

just another way of ripping us Brits off!

Still a money grabbing exercise IMO. If you pay for ten years you should receive ten years. They charge enough for them in the first place.
Will they reduce the price? I think not!

You still get 10 years. What you don't get is the ability to renew it 6 months in advance so having a , now illegal as non-eu, passport with 10 years & 6 months vailidity

And as it takes up to 4 weeks to renew you only get 9 years and 11 months for your money.
Would we all accept it if the same applied to car insurance, home insurance etc. Or the other rip off of the T.V. licence?
Anything and everything can be done on line these days in minutes, so why not the passport renewal? No profit in that though!

It is dated just before it is sent to you not when you applied for it.

My last one took under 2 weeks to come back

But if you are travel to somewhere that insists that you have 6 month left on your passport before travelling you'd have to renew after 9 years and 6 months thus loosing 6 months of that which you have previously paid for as you can only have 10 years not 10 years 6 months.

You can do it online , it’s dead easy and they don’t date it until they finish processing it and post it out to you. I’ve just had a look at Nick’s and the renewal date is 23 Dec 2029 and that’s the date he got the txt to say it was in the post . I only know that as I’m Mrs neurotic and was cursing myself for doing it over the Christmas period but it still only took 9 days.

Or wait till the passport is due for renewal, renew it for the full 10 years then travel after that

Well,my missus knew about this coz she told me about it a couple of weeks ago.

But then, she knows everything. Of course!

And she doesn’t visit this site.;)

Lucky I got my new passport just before they changed the rules, so its valid for 10 years and 9 months.
But from now on a 10 year passport will in effect only be valid for around 9 and a bit years.

Which means every person will need at least one extra passport in their lifetime.
At around £100 a pop times 60 million people that is £6 billion quid extra for the British government.

It is valid for 10 years less a couple of days in the post and not all 60m have a passport...

It's not valid for ten years. Some countries insist you have 6 months left on it before travel and many more are 3 months. Therefore it is only valid for 9 years 6 months or at best 9 years and 9 months .
Therefore price should be reduced to account for this. but it wont be.

As pointed out, most countries will not accept passports with less than 6 months validity.
For those counties that need visas, the passport usually has to be valid 6 months after the expiry of the visa.

Agree a fair percentage of the 60m don't have passports at any given moment, however this will be changing over the next decade or so, as it will become increasingly impossible to access official services, get a job, or rent a flat without either a passport or official photo ID.

ID cards via the back door are on their way in.

It is obviously valid for 10 years, if you want to travel somewhere in the last 3/6 months before expiry you may not be able to use it to travel to said country but your passport is still valid and in date and can be used in many other countries.

For heavens sake tribalbrit

I don’t actually know how much it costs to renew, but taking this 6 months being discussed you are losing 5% in value terms

possibly around £5 ?

to travel somewhere needing a more than 6 months passport life you will have handed over a few £K I would guess

move on to something worth getting this excited over

But you have to remember that this is how it was before they gave you the "renew 9 months early add on" so you've been getting the extra for nothing until now. (y)

Who's excited? Not I.
Lets just all accept everything we are given, like it or not. :imoutahere:

Surely the minimum 10 year validity would also apply to a German passport holder returnig from a holiday in Turkey. If so it is not just the Brits.

I have quoted my own post because the subsequent posts seemed to have continued with the rants that we Brits are being ripped off, totally ignoring the fact that other countries have to do the same.

That, plus what Gus-Lopez said in post 26 about the system has just reverted to how it was a few years ago.

So where is the rip-off?

Geoff
