I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
Morning all - quite a day yesterday - Mrs T and I (see foto) went to our Grandson James passing out parade at HMS Raleigh - he is now a "new style" Accelerated Apprentice Greenie (sort of cross between a Direct entry Tiff, a Tiff Apprentice and a Mechanician Apprentice items in italics for the benefit of any RN vets on here :) - James is Following in the footsteps of his Dad - he was a artificer and both of his Grandads - I was a Chief Petty Officer Mechanician (the other Grandad was a submariner - now sadly departed) - I'm a very proud Grandad!!!(y)

Congratulations to James!
Initial training in any of HM Forces ain’t an easy ride!!

I know the pride in witnessing a Passing Out Parade. Watched my own grandson at a P.O.P. at a rain-swept Harrogate. Alas, he never continued in the Army and left :(.

Congratulations also on a proud family history in the Navy.

James

We are no longer Newbie's.
My mate from work was there also to see his son pass out yesterday. I recommended him for a career in the RN as an ex Mechanician myself (disrated to Artificer in 1983!! you'll know what I mean @Teuchter !!) Are you a fellow MSM recipient?
Edit - close up shows BEM I think?

Good luck to your grandson. Is that a BEM or an MSM you're proudly displaying there? along with a LSGC? I have an interest in medals and like to keep learning.

Spot on XRN - BEM it is - I narrowly avoided being disrated to tiff as I left, still a Mechanician, in March 83 after 24 short but colourfull years in the Andrew!! :)

How proud you must be! And thank you for sharing your good news when there seems to be rather a lot of gloom about.

What a shower of Sprogs you lot are.
I did Mechs Course in 1963 (Mech 20R Class)
Left the Andrew in 1972
Official No. PM979--9
Just missed out on the medals due to always being at sea .
What happened to the seven horizontal creases in the trouser legs of the uniform?

The Tiffs use to call us 'Retreads', and we had to remind them that Mechs worked to a tolerance of to the nearest 'thousanth of an inch', but they only worked to a tolerance of to the 'nearest ship'

Must be Tot Time.

Well done, brought back some memories. Our daughter started at HMS Raleigh in January 1997 and went on to helicopter maintenance at Culdrose and a deployment on the Lustybus and Fort George

Lovely photo. Congratulations from a fellow Hampshire funster!

My nephew is in the Navy, down at Culdrose.

HMS Seahawk - RNAS Culdrose holds a special memory for me! :D

I went to Culdrose in December 1962 with 848 helicopter squadron when we returned to the UK on HMS Bulwark from 18 months in the Far East, whilst at Culdrose in 1963 I met a lovely 21 year old "Wren" (y)

And married her in 1964!! :)

That is her with our Grandson and me in the photo - we will have been married 54 years on August the 1st this year - if we don't fall out before then that is!! ;)
