Folks, there is a new (to me anyway!) Parliamentary Petition out there that you may like to add your voice to. At last, it's about reviewing the UK Parking Laws to help clarify and standardise the legislation on overnighting in Car Parks and the like across the UK. Must be of interest surely!

Pass it on to other forums you may know of and post your confirmation in this thread if you sign the petition so we can keep an eye on how things are going.

Have signed the petition but won’t be holding my breath re the outcome!

I have not signed (yet) but am wondering if a review might lead to the closure of Aires that do exist or pave the way for further Aires to open.

I am happy to pay to park / overnight but I don't like to pay (what I consider) a large amount to park on a piece of rough ground with few (or no) facilities. If there is water and proper disposal facilities (rubbish at least) then a small charge is more than acceptable.

I can't help but think the travellers will use this to their advantage. Not signing.
Basically what you want is to camp for free.
Not happening.
No, you're wrong if that's what you think I want. I'm perfectly happy to pay, as I'm sure many of us here are, and am not suggesting otherwise. It's just nice to have more choices available for us all, including you, and a clearer understanding of the rules.

Is there any point in signing these petitions. There have been lots of them on different subjects but have any achieved anything.

They won't if you don't sign them as you need 100,000 signatures to get them before parliament. With only around 225,000 Motorhomes in use in the UK unlikely to get 100,000 signature.

Signed.

But what happens if you do get it before parliament. It seems there has been somewhere in the region of 24,000 petitions to parliament but apart from getting a debate has any achieved anything.

Yep, a similar petition regarding C1 and 70years old last week.

Currently 2533 and needs 100,000 signatures to be considered for debate.
2,533 signatures gained in 4.5 months.
97,500 signatures needed in 6 weeks.

It was never going to happen.

If 25% of motorhomes are into wild camping and all signed the petition its still only 55000....well short of the 100000 needed to BE CONSIDERED FOR DEBATE .... to be considered, not to be debated.

This petition is so badly worded its unclear what they actually want.

Before the flak starts - of course many motorhomers will know but your average MP will not have a clue and could just as easily end up banning it.

There are a plethora of small CLs scattered around the country plus masses of small sites all charging a small fee. How much do you think is a fair small charge to pay.

Signed - come on wake up UK. The leisure industry is huge so why not adopt Aires in and around our towns. The high street is dying unless some rejuvenation’s are injected.

I doubt many motorhomers staying for free will be shopping on the high street (always exceptions though). The issue to me seems to be to many local councillors and associates with campsites who are blocking the idea of Aires.
Unfortunately until the travellers issue is dealt with properly in this country, Aires will just be seen as a honey pot for them.

Yes, but that's not what the petition asks for. It could have made more of a case, by including revenue from foreign visitors' motor homes, providing parking places big enough for vans etc.

Travellers are not going to leave anytime soon. I agree they are a problem and most blight the landscape with rubbish caring little for their surroundings.

That said, why should we not have better parking facilities here in the U.K. Aires work in France so why not here. Having flexibility to overnight or short stay in different towns or locations as we tour around the country offers an alternative to the usual crowded and expensive campsites. I can only see positives to such an approach for the economy and local businesses.

I fully agree, but looking around my locality (west coast) it's pretty clear parking spaces have been abused and height barriers installed. But there is at least parking although it's not on the nice beach front, it's on the back of the industrial estate, with no amenities.

Popcorn!. :D. Seriously, this has been debated/advocated in the past. There IS definitely a case for Parking reg`s (and overnighting thereof) to be rationalised. (Note:- I said OVERNIGHTING, NOT Camping) Overnighting would be a safety issue. Camping is covered already by rules from the 60`s? (I think, GJH will be along soon to put me right if I am wrong :( ). As someone who spent many a (happy??) night in lay-bys courtesy of my employer!. There is a crying need for cheap (yes even free) Parking for the taking of "Rest". Motorway services which do allow it, Also make Charges which are eye watering, and above the "Driver night out" allowance", (even when a breakfast is offered) hence why the access roads are often littered with "foreign" trucks! trying to avoid said fee`s and prepared to risk fines for so doing!.

The "itinerant" ( The "P" word is banned) issue is separate, and can easily be addressed by ensuring that after no more that 36 hrs, fines and CONFISCATION and removal at owner expense, in lieu of payment is levied.
