We are going to the NEC on Tuesday, and then heading off for a few days in the van. On our way back, we want to spend a day in Yeovil, as have never been there.
So, can anyone recommend a good car park, that is Campervan friendly (6.4m Campervan), in or close to the centre.
any ‘must see’ places in Yeovil?
Many thanks.

Not in Yeovil, but not far away……

If you’re into military type museums then a great day out, with plenty of parking. (y)

I presume you are joking, Yeovil is a really ugly town, I visit 5 or 6 times a week as that’s where my gym is. It’s not called Yeovile for nothing! I am a local. I grew up in Castle Cary so know the area well and now live in Sherborne. If you really must go then your best bet is to park at the Yeo Leisure Park, Old Station Way BA20 1NP
Some of the spaces on the corners are OK for motorhomes. You are then by the Town which is ghastly or Ninesprings which is a nice walk.

You’re only 5 miles from the beautiful market town of Sherborne. A much better option. We currently have a bit of a nightmare traffic system due to a wall falling down but you can park in Sainsburys. Even better is to park in Castle garden Centre for free( not the actual Castle but next door) and wander into town, lots of lovely shops, cafes and a beautiful Abbey, Almshouses plus Sherborne boys school.

Agree with Carolyn. We live near Yeovil and would not go to it. You have the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Haynes Motor Museum which are both worth a look if you are into that sort of thing. Sherborne is a lovely town and worth a visit.

That’s much appreciated, thank you.
It looks like Sherborne it is then👍👍

Hmm, lots of negativity about Yeovil. The OP wanted advice on parking in order to look around. Perhaps he should be allowed to draw his own conclusions after a visit. 👍

Well, the OP asked ...............

............any ‘must see’ places in Yeovil?
Just replying 'No' to that wouldn't have been helpful.

Look up Clay Pigeon Kart club. Kart racing and clay pigeon shooting plenty of parking it’s on the A37 Yeovil to Dorchester road.

I wouldn’t have wanted him to waste his day. Our first house was in Yeovil, we lived there for 7 happy years as Nick worked for Westland Helicopters for over 40 years so I do know what I’m talking about. If you should ever meet Chocy boy and his sister Jacky just ask her about it, they went there on the bus one day when staying near Wells, she will have you in stitches! Sadly they didn’t make it to Ninesprings which is the only half decent green area.

Montecute House is close by and worth a visit. There's also a campsite at a pub called the Mason's Arms at Odcombe which is also very nice. Yeovil itself I agree is nothing to write home about.

Recommend The Masons Arms, we've used it regularly for the last 7 years as our daughter lives in Yeovil. Have to agree with OPs view of Yeovil it has a run down feel to the town centre which has deteriorated a lot over the last few years. Montecute House is a superb NT property but only really suitable for PVC and car parking as it's a small car park with narrow access/roads.

I don’t think you’ll regret it. We tend to take it for granted but when the grown up children have their friends visit from far and wide (including overseas) they think it’s lovely. There are two castles, the old castle which is a ruin and the new castle which is grand, think Sir Walter Raleigh built it. You have to pay to go in but there is a nice free walk up round the back of the Castle that gives you lovely view over the grounds and the castle.

If you park at Castle garden centre, come out of the car park you can turn right to go to the town.
If you turn left the drive to the New Castle is just next door, just a few meters past that there is a gate, go through the gate, go up the hill keeping the hedge on the left. It‘s a bit steep but only 100m. There will be another gate on your left, go through there and keep walking, The castle, lake and grounds will be on the left. The cafe in the Castle garden centre may still be in the process of being refurbished, if so I’d eat in town.

Peartree is my favourite. Be warned that if you’re from up North you might not like the prices but if you did go to the Peartree for instance for a sandwich/toastie you get a bit of salad plus 3 different sides like colelaw, couscous and a chickpea or pasta salad.

Obviously we don’t have a Wetherspoons, Yeovil does have one but the fights start by lunchtime and that’s the women!

Why is it obvious please?

Sorry , I think you’re taking me far too seriously. For people who know the area Sherborne is thought of as rather posh. It’s a small town with two castles, an Abbey and three public schools. I grew up just over the border in Somerset and only visited twice and once was on a school trip to see the castles, it was only 8 miles away but was considered to be another world.

It’s even pronounced differently depending on whether you’re a local with an accent like me so call it Sherborne with both the r’s pronounced whereas if you’re one of the posh people or an incomer it’s pronounced “shah-bn” , not an r in sight.

A few years back Tescos wanted to come to town, Valerie Singleton and some dress designer rallied their troops and campaigned against it, marching up and down Cheap St, we only needed Sainsburys, one supermarket was plenty. They won. The following year Waitrose opened without a murmur. I think you get my drift.

And he would agree it’s a dump ?

There are lots of good housing developments in Yeovil. Some good older roads with nice houses. Prices much cheaper than the surrounding small towns and villages.
The Octagon theatre is amazing for a place of it’s size and brings in top acts.
There are lots of gyms. Yeovil Rugby Club is an inclusive club and thriving. Yeovil Football Club is struggling a bit at the moment but is still well supported.
For many years the majority of people who lived there were Westland workers or Yeovilton staff and all the stuff that grew to support that.

It’s a perfectly pleasant place to live. Three of my cousins live there.
It’s just not an attractive town for a day out. Like so many town centres it is filled with closed down shops, charity shops and chain coffee shops. I was trying to be helpful pointing the OP in the direction of a pretty place to visit. I made a few tongue in cheek comments. I have been in many a wetherspoons as my Funster friends can testify to. I think you are just trying to be a bit difficult but never mind.

...Wow, that sounds like it would take quite a bit of co-ordination! :ROFLMAO:

Ok truce 👍, not being difficult just trying to be positive about somewhere the op hadn't visited before, and, I know Yeovil and the surroundings well.

That sounds like brilliant fun!! I'm just amazed the authorities allow people to blast away with a shotgun from the back of a go-kart... !! :giggle:

And me…..but some don’t class North Somerset as being in the real Somerset. However, pre Avon (1974 I think) it was firmly part of Somerset. (y)

I'm from Somerset - born and bred. And North Somerset and Avon  have never existed as far as I'm concerned. They didn't ask my permission to change the name and that's the end of it as far as I'm concerned!

Yeovil???

If you have never visited the town I strongly suggest you maintain that status.

As has been mentioned, Sherbourne is a nicer town and not far away. Park down near on opf the supermarkets and you can walk about quite easily, it isn't big.

For an even nicer trip pop over to Bridport and West Bay on the coast. A marvelous little market town but parking in the town can be an issue on Weds and Sats (market days) camper van parking down by the coach station.
West Bay is a funny little oddity well worth a visit.

We live 30 minutes away, don’t go. It’s been said but we certainly would not go to visit or recommend it.

Sherborne is stunning with a lovely town, church and castle. We live close to Stourhead estate and that real Nice to visit too, and I think they allow MH’s overnight too.
