Thanks for the help, looks like we are in the green so will go googling now. Les wants to see Berlin before heading south.

Berlins rail system is fantastic, and cheap....as are the rest of Germany's railways.

Park outside the city, get a train into the city and walk/tram/bus around the city.

A "green card" is the old fashioned way of saying "I have insurance for specific European countries" and yes you do need that. Not all insurance companies cover all the European countries as a matter of course, NFU for example, you have to specify each country you want to travel in/through and it is a monthly renewal which is infuriating.
