Right not the nicest subject in the world, but when in Spain/Portugal, when it says no paper down wc.
Does this also mean toilet roll after paperwork done after a no2
Wife says yes and I don't want to believe her.

Yes, very common across the world.

My understanding is that a lot of countries have 2" or there about waste pipes while we have 4" or 6" wastes. The former being more susceptible to blockages by paper.

It goes in the bin, you can place it "butter" side down, fold or sandwich it between two sheets (That's a bit like a courtesy flush you know)

The reason for it is the drains block easily, OR the installation may be on a septic system and the paper clogs it all up so don't think " I'll shove it down and no one will know" because the paper can really mess it all up.

My qualification for all this information? I have a septic system (biological soak away) at my property in France.

First time I saw this was on the Greek islands, a plastic bucket containing a plastic bag..... No lid.
The strange thing was, even though there was no lid and the temp was high 20s it didn't stink at all.

In Cyprus it was common to put used TP in a bin. I was told that this was because old houses had narrower pipe work , as BRASH says, and also made of concrete that was rough so paper stuck to it and build up caused blockages. Not necessary in modern houses, hotels but where you saw a sign, you knew to use the bin.

You may notice in some places a tap with a length of hose that you can use to wash yourself rather than wipe, this is quite common in some places around the world and avoids having to place your paper in the basket.

The drains on Curfu were laid my the Brits using 2" pipe..
There is always a bin for the paperwork !

And it all gets back into landfill where it decomposes, rather than chopped up then being dumped half a mile off shore in the sea like in coastal GB.

Does it say this very often?
Everywhere I know of. It doesn't. 'say'it you see the bin and know. Even at my own house anything else goes in the plastic bag/bin. Same in motorhome.

And when we came back from our first trip to Greece, we spent a fortnight throwing it in the laundry basket when we got home.!!!

I disagree there, it all and I mean all gets recycled and spread on land as fertiliser, that is after going through a bio digester and using the the methane to run a generator.
Cheap fertiliser for farmers and nothing in landfill.

We keep nappy sacks in the loo and bag paper up straight away to stop any smells. Dispose of them where we can in refuse bins. All you end up with is a slurry in your cassette.
Hope your nappy sacks are biodegradable.
