hi,
doing a pretty much full on renovation of my 1996 kontiki, one of the previous owners painted it and its pretty crap, also i have had to cut holes and chunks out of the grp so i'm going to repaint the whole lot. was wondering if anyone here could recommend a good reasonably priced paint stripper as i'm repainting with 2k polyurethene and really need to get all previous paint off, some sands off easy but other bits are more stubborn.
i repainted the roof a few weeks ago but that was with a one part boat deck paint on top of epoxy primer so i didn't need to strip previous paint.

Nitro-mors.
Stipple it on with a brush and agitate, the old paint will bubble and blister.
But don't get it on clothes and skin plus it will need a very thorough wash afterwards to remove all traces of it .

Somewhere in the dark side of my memory tells me that Nitro Mors is no longer available and if it is formula has been changed and is now next to useless.
Edit.. yes was banned a number of years ago by EU. And formula was changed..
Old hands who remember the original (myself included) say new version works but is no where near as good as the original.!

Go to a vehicle paint supplier, you buy 5 litres of stripper, for about the price of about a litre from B&Q or Home base; if never used it before, you need good overalls, goggles, very good gloves, as this stuff burns like hell ( my experience)and if it gets in your eyes it could blind you, have plenty water handy to get it off you , I'm not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, just some of my experience. Really Dangerous Stuff

Maybe wrong but paint stripperams not suitable for GRP.

Looks like your right.
Bloody 'save the earth' tree huggers, getting things changed just because it had a volatile chemical in it

thanks guys, i did see boat paint stripper is ok for grp but its quite expensive, will do some googling to see if i can find anything thats not going to set me back several hundred quid as i have at least 30m² to do.

The paint stripper I was talking about was for steel surfaces only, sorry I should have added that. I'm glad the Retailers are closed

When I was renovating an old house with paint over old thick sticky varnish and could not get Nitromors any more, after much searching I found
"PAINT PANTHER" Paint and Varnish remover... and IMO it was better than the original Nitromors and more importantly is still available.

Nitromors is still available. There used to be a water based and a solvent based version. Perhaps the solvent based version is the one withdrawn. Pity as it was good. Like most things that are not good for us or the planet.

Used to use Nitro-mors a lot , stripping Die cast for restoration. Started at it again during the Covid 19 nonsense, couldn't get Nitro-mors so got the new thing.

Where I just coated the model before, then 10 mins later washed it off, with the new stuff, I had to dip the model in an old coffee jar full of the stuff over night to get the same result

Would it be appropriate to sand down the rough bits and apply a primer before the 2k polyurethane or is the precious paint work too bad?

i've sanded bits down while fixing some stress cracks, i'll have to test with some strong thinners to see if the existing paint is 2k or not, if it is then i'll just sand all loose off and use epoxy primer.
the paint i'm using is international perfection. its a 2k polyurethane marine paint. its pretty strong stuff and i'm a bit worried about a bad reaction with the old paint.
i used it on the side skirts that i had to rebuild and paint but they were a bit easier to sand all the paint off beforehand, the skirts took 7 coats , 2 epoxy primer, 2 undercoat and 3 top coat.

well i decided not to use paint stripper, i sanded all loose off and did a pretty aggressive first pass all over with 24 grit, then did a couple more passes finishing with 100 grit before priming with an epoxy marine 2k primer. i did a test area a few days ago and all seemed well with the paint below. will do another coat of primer then move on to undercoat x2 coats and top coat, 2-3 coats.

we"ll see how it looks in a couple of days, still plenty time for me to stuff it up. 😂

well i decided to just sand what wanted to come off and then paint, all in all its turned out ok apart from millions of little midges with a fetish for freshly painted things, little bastards were straight on there after each coat..
finished the one side so just got windows, vents, electric hook up , etc to fix back before turning van round and repeating the exercise, then onto the rear and finally the front overcab bit.
thanks for all the info regarding paint stripper though. i thought it was worth asking but decided it was probably a risk and extra time/expense so decided to plough on.
the only negative for not using the stripper was all the extra sanding after a couple of coats of undercoat to level everything off, i got it 90% good, anything above the awning i didn't stress so much about as only birds will see the bumps.

also the photos actually make it look better than it really is, the paint job has improved it but its far from perfect, decals will be strategically placed to hide fly corpses and disentigrated roller bits.

I actually did this once myself. The slightest imperfections show through decals. I didn't sand the slightly raised paint lines left by masking tape. Try an offcut on the van first and you will see what i mean. Good luck

Something I've learned painting boats: if flies etc land on the wet paint, tempting as it is to shift them straight away, leave them 'til it's dry. Then they barely leave a mark.

yeah i learned that too, problem was a couple of flies must've been on steroids coz they managed to bury themselves in the paint.
