I'm new to motorhoming
Hi Everyone, me and my husband are off to Spain for 6 weeks on the 16th of April from St Malo to the Spanish Border and the intention is to travel to Granada for a few days to visit the Alhambra Palace etc and then down to Estepona and return via the East Coast. We have travelled around Europe since we got our Hymer Exsis-i 578 at the beginning of 2016, and we love it and we love Motorhoming. We have travelled to up and down the Eastern Routes and the Western Route to Portugal but wondered if anyone knows any good over night stops on the Central route to Granada they seem few and far between although we have stayed a couple of times at Camping International in Aranjuez . Just wondered if anyone out there knows any others good stops

Was at camping International in Aranjuez a couple of weeks ago, bit rough getting ready for the summer coming.

if you are going through central spain a nice park up at Albacete with lovelu village an dcastle etc.

Agree that Aranjuez can be a bit tatty but convenient position. One tip for The Alhambra, buy your tickets at least two days in advance via their website. Its a poor bit of software but persevere and pay. We stay at and get a taxi both ways to Alhambra, much simpler than buses and walking.

We liked the convenience of the site just south of Madrid at Aranjuez. While there we took a tour of the palace and many rooms are copies of the Madrid Palace without the whole place being too big. We had come straight down from Santander, stopping overnight at the Elephant Aire and then carried on to Aranjuez. This was March 2018.

We've used the ASCI campsite at Riaza as a useful stopover on that central north south route.

There’s a very good free aire in Palencia with toilets and showers and hook up if required all they ask is fill your diesel tank up at their filling station. E.S. Suances
Ctra. Castrogonzalo, 19A, 34005 Palencia, Spain
You’ll find it on Google maps

We try to avoid motorways. We drove to Murcia (too far East) from Bilbao stopping at Medinacelli (Haro, Logrono, Soria), Castillo de Garcimunoz (detour up to the top of Cuenca: interesting!), Chinchilla de Monte Aragon (lovely village but only 74miles).

It’s a decent road from C de G to Granada (250 miles)

I would recommend staying on the top Car Park at the Alhambra for the night before you visit. It is about 500m from the entrance. Arrive at about 5:30pm and wander down to ticket office, which will be quiet by then, and pick up your ordered tickets for the next day. That will avoid any queue in the morning.

The car park is not cheap, about 25€ for 24 hours when we were there, but it is cheaper and easier than staying on a camp site for 2 nights and paying for taxis or buses. The next day we got to the Alhambra at opening time and spent an enjoyable day wandering around. We left at about 4pm and drove towards the coast for about 25 miles or so before staying at a nice free Aire overlooking the Presa de Beznar reservoir.

There’s a nice Aire just off the A4 south of Madrid at Puerto Lapice. There are two Aires one is free and the other you have to pay. The free Aire fills up quite quickly. Another nice place to stop is Camper Park Huerta just outside Murcia it’s set in a lemon grove. 15€ a night with EHU water etc. Have to pay 50 cents for shower

A Second for Avila, very convenient and a great view of the walls albeit the barrier is a bit of a pain if you take the option for paypal.

If you re in the central area have a look at Cuenca, Aire/permitted parking by the river isnt great but what a lovely town.

A slight diversion but Segovia is a nice stop, Car park Aire by the bull ring but then follow the Roman Aqueduct into town

One of our favourite sites is Camping El Camino at Castrojeriz just wsw of Burgos. Very friendly laidback little site by a stunning village on the Camino de Santiago. Restaurant on site popular with locals.
But not in this year’s ACSI book - so maybe need to check they’ve not retired?

Can you just turn up and pay at the barrier? One review I saw on Campercontact suggested that you had to prebook online.

We did but I suspect it depends how busy it is.

I initially paid by paypal and didnt get a code so I then had to pay by card which worked fine. I did eventually get the paypal payment back though.

Alhambra was wonderful but don't think the overnight option in the top carpark was there then so stopped in a miserable tight campsite about 2 miles out, would definitely use the car park next time. You used to be able to get the tickets from one of the bank ATMs

We stayed at the car park top of hill next to the Alhambra a couple of days ago. It was perfect for the visit .
Would recommend getting tkts in advance and the early time to avoid the crowds if visiting Alhambra . Don’t forget to take your passports, they ID everyone at the moment. It’s currently €32 for 24hrs for car park
It’s just a short stroll down the hill to the old part of Granada

We were there in November and just turned up. There was a festival so it was rammed. If check if there is anything on in the town if you'd rather not pre book.

The drive there was amazing. Just seemed to be castle after castle in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the info about Avila.

The top car park is for coaches and other large vehicles so I doubt they would close it. It is the only ones without any low trees. We used it in April 2018 and got the suggestion from other funsters who had used it before. It is just a car park which gives you a ticket when you drive in and you pay by machine before you leave.

We did almost the same, but used the bus, quick cheap and easy. We like to eat earlier than the spaniards though and all the eateries near the site didn't open till 8 pm, well apart from a kebab shop. All the lovely restaurants were just opening up as we were walking back 😂
