Good morning Funsters,
We are now 8 days away from our first European adventure and have the tunnel booked next tuesday for a 18.20 crossing. We are heading to the Bordeaux area (Hourtin) where we are booked on a site. My question of my fellow funsters is can you recommend an aire that is a sensible distance from the tunnel and close to the A16. I have had a look and can only find a couple, but wondered if anybody knew somewhere not shown. Thanks in advance.

Cite de Europe which is right outside the Eurotunnel and has a Carrefour Hypermarket open late stock-up when you arrive in France. The motorhome parking is right outside the Police station and we have used it a number of times with no concerns.

Calais has a couple of Aires one by the ferry terminal which we find is too noisy and the second one half a km down the road at the Marina both easy to find on Google.

There is a new one at Broken Link Removed we have driven post a couple of times by the watersports centre but have not stayed

Gravelines, there are two aires in Gravelines we prefer the one at Broken Link Removed

There are two aires at Le Touquet and another at Fort Mahon Plage, All within an hour or so's drive from Calais.
We have also spent the night at the parking area of the Auchan Hypermarket at Boulogne St. Martin without any problems.

We have used the aire at Wissant, which may be full by the time you arrive. There is another nicer aire at Tardinghen. Don't be put off by the picture in the aires book ( for some reason they are obsessed by showing you the service points instead of the parking areas) there is terraced grass parking in front of the farm and two other grass parking aires nearby owned by the same farm with views over the channel. About 20 minutes from Calais and close to the A16 for your onward journey.
Personally, I don't see the appeal of parking at Cite Europe near a supermarket car park when there are nice open spaces nearby. You are on holiday after all!

You are spoilt for choice but I expect you have gathered that by now.
If we go in the evening, there is a price break on the tunnel at 8:20pm. We then arrive in Calais just after 10:00pm french time so just pop into Cite Europe.
When we go mid afternoon we like to stay at Boulogne-Sur-Mer just for the view. It cost 5.25 euro but beware some pitches are sloping.

Gravelines would be my choice, suppose everyone's fed up of me going on about it, but even though it's the oppisate way to where you are going it's only twenty mins up the motorway great big sign , can't miss it, nice view of boats in the marina , good restaurant just over the bridge, 5 min walk into town, shops and bars, I could spend a week there, every time we go over it's always our first and last stop supermarket with petrol about a mile lidl about half a mile service thingy just around the corner(y)(y)(y)

Yes I had forgotten the Aire at Tardinghen and if you time it right the Brewery is next door also ;-)

All the above plus further down the A16 you will find two Aires at le Crotoy, though they will probably be busy this time of year.

If you are heading onto the A28 shortly after Abbeville you have the Aire on the cliff-top at Le Treport, one of our favourites, with the little funicular taking you and down the cliff-side into the town below. There are also the stairs for the more energetic....

Located on the edge of village next to farmland, with some lakes nearby & about 350m from the village centre with shops & restaurant. Artisanal service point with drainage grid that is a bit awkward to access.

REVIEW

CAMPING CAR MAGAZINE REVIEWED & RECOMMENDED 02/07: "Parking on grass & the rural ambience guarantee a good nights sleep here, only to be interrupted by the cockerel in the morning. Also there is a fresh bread delivery by the boulangers van in the morning."

2007 A very quiet & peaceful place, nice walks/ cycle routes around the lakes but ground may become soft in wet weather. Notice board on site with local info -- restaurants/ walks & map. There is a fire station opposite but luckily they didn't have any call outs whilst we were there although the smallholding next door made enough noise.

SITE DESCRIPTION: This Aire (Les Fleur des Champs) is privately owned by a local farm and is found close to Cap Gris Nez in an open grassy area with superb panoramic views. Pitches are on grass off a gravel track -- a bit exposed & without shade but they have glorious views to compensate. A good service point next to the barn is found at the 'Ferme de L'Horloge' in a separate nearby location (a short walk away). A 2nd parking area (Le Fond de Sombre) is also available (owned by the same farm).

REVIEW

2007 Super position for an Aire -- very quiet and great 360-degree views. Owner is very helpful & friendly & gave us some leaflets about the area. Popular area for walking & cycling -- quite flat.

2007 A lovely spot; this private Aire is basically a field with a gravel access track in quite a remote location, excellent panoramic views over the English Channel & countryside. Although it is a reasonable sized field (20-30 spaces) -- there are not that many level places on it. Very quiet -- plenty of birdsong, the farmer comes in the evening or early morning to collect fees. There is a Restaurant/ Brasserie in Tardinghen & shops in Wissant (both a short dive away). Farm is quite close for services -- included in price & farmer is very helpful. Could be a bit lonely here in winter -- there were only 3 campervans here in July when we stayed.

2011 "A private aire owned by the "Ferme de l'Horloge", ideal for nature lovers, with panoramic sea views & a service point located on the farm." RECOMMENDED CAMPING-CAR MAGAZINE

Just a little bit further distancewise but probably about the same in time is the Aire at Baie de la Somme, actually on the A16, which has a dedicated motorhome/caravan parking area. Would normally not recommend staying on a motorway aire in France but have had a look at this one (didn't stay) and it looked ok to us.

Just want to say a big thank you to those of you who took the time and trouble to post a reply. We have decided as its our first time going continental in the m/h and our early evening arrival, that we will probably take the easy/wise option of Cite Europe, this way we dont arrive in France and panic to much about finding somewhere to stay and as we have a couple of days to get to Hourtin Plage we are not pushed for time. Again much appreciate the effort fellow funsters have gone to. Thanks Tim

Hi Tim, Where are you planning to stop on your 2 nights on your way to Hourtin, if you need any help just ask,
also while you are down there try and visit the Dune du Pyla or Pilat dune that's over 100 mtrs high fanastic views from the top and great slide/skiing back down on your feet free aire there as well.
