I'm posting again here because I think it will be missed in the USL, but if Jim wants to move it that's OK.

SO ...

Our first hiccough. Yesterday coming back from a walk with friends the STOP light came on on our Peugeot Partner van and the needle for the temperature gauge went to the top. The van was serviced last week in anticipation of its long drive to Madrid! We wanted to drive to Madrid on Friday in this vehicle. Martin had a look at it last night and the temperature gauge was still at the top. He took it to the local mechanic this morning who had a look and told Martin to bring it back at 12.00 noon. The mechanic tried many different things but nothing worked. Said bring it back tomorrow.

For Martin, this is getting too close for comfort, so he has now booked a hire car to take us to Madrid and we'll sort out getting home later.

Soooo at the moment we are going to Madrid airport early on Saturday morning instead of a leisurely drive on Friday and an overnight stop.

Hope this is not a sign of things to come :(.

Have a wonderful trip, I am sure this will be the only thing that goes wrong . It is all part of the joys of travelling, nothing to stop such resourceful people as you two.

Hi @jumartoo .. how long are you there for and what trek are you doing... ie traditional to machu picchu or something else??
Was there 2014..and did the salkantay pass on route to machu picchu... thoroughly enjoyed it and was amazed and humbled to see how the locals still make a life in the mountains...
Hope the altitude doesn't bother you too much.. and you have a fantastic time..

Arrived at our hotel at 7.00 am. Our room opens onto an inner courtyard where we're sitting at the moment. We had a couple of hours sleep and then went for a quick look round.

May 1st is National day so we had the added interest of all the processions around the main square.

For lunch we followed the locals and ate soup and chicken and rice for 5 Soles (about £1.25) and then sat in the square eating a five scoop ice cream for 50p!

Its 4.45am here. Our bodyclocks are all over. We are a small group of 4, we met the other two for a few minutes Sunday afternoon.

Yesterday morning we met the guide and lost a group member. The two of them, not travelling together but met at the airport, went to the town for food. The woman returned at about 8pm.

At 8.30am yesterday the three of us met to wait for the guide and decided to call the man, he didn't answer the knocking on his door. By this time the guide arrived and we told him we didn't know where the fourth member was. He looked in the room and the bed hadn't been slept in. Phone calls were made and his boss arrived for info to call the police. They asked if we minded waiting to start our tour whilst they sorted things out.

The English boss was in Cusco and was coming over to the hotel, on his way he saw a guy staggering along the road and asked if he was ???? He said yes and so he brought him to the hotel.

We set off on our tour without him. We have yet to see him again so don't know yet where he was all night.

I'm writing this in small sections on my phone.

Our tour started right outside the hotel door. We are staying in an Inca palace. We then went down into the centre to an Inca temple and Spanish church amalgamation. The Incas built the walls with absolutely straight lines and no mortar. Archeologists dismantled part of a wall to find out how the walls withstood time and earthquakes. The blocks were interlocking, male and female, with holes and protuberances.

It's a fab place. There is something on in the square most weekends, they love their processions!

I bought an oil painting from a chap with a little studio in Cusco about 15 years ago, it's still hanging in my house and still reminds me of the place.

Have a great trip.

We were then collected by van and driven up the impossibly steep and narrow cobbled streets to Sascayhuaman. It's thought this could have been a fortress. It's walls are built in zigzags. 12 years ago a new part was discovered which probably represents the sun. Some of the stones in the walls here are estimated to weigh 361 tons!

In this last picture the Incas built an image of a llama with the stones. Clue - it's facing right and the smallest triangular stone is the ear.

Have a great trip - and so much to see even before you have really got started. Had to give the missing man post a "Funny" - hope he will be all right. :) A quick bit of Googling suggests you are going at the best time - after the rains and before the peak tourist season.

Our next stop on the tour was to Tambo Machay a place of water worship. The niches were built to house the mummified bodies of past leaders so they could still attend ceremonies. The place were are sitting is a raised area in sight of the fortress and was used as a communication point. The fortress is in sight if the next place and so on. Communication could be by flute or other instrument depending on what type of ceremony was going to take place.

And in case he can't wait, here is a foretaste:

roasted-guinea-pig-4-b.jpg
Apparently it's common for families in Latin America to keep a cage full of Guinea Pigs in the kitchen, in the same way as we keep chickens.

Now (and especially for @Robert Clark ) lunch. No 5 Soles lunch today. We went with Jose to a place he recommended. Typical Peruvian food. Martin and Jose had Lomo Salteada, stir fried beef and vegetables with rice and chips, I had Ajo Gallina, Garlic chicken with rice and potatoes in a sauce with chilli and other slices and Jillian had Sacred Valley trout.

Chicken. It tasted better than it looks here. The potatoes were sliced and under the sauce and were purple!

Before we ate we had a lesson in how to make the typical drink Pisco Sour. 6 ice cubes, a measure of pisco spirit, sugar syrup, egg white and lemon juice were put into a cocktail shaker and shaken.

Didn't get a photo of us drinking it, but it was very nice.

Need to get ready now to meet the others for today's trip. Hope to have internet later.
