We are catching an early morning ferry to Portsmouth from Caen in a couple of days. Is it possible to park up at the ferry port the night before or are there any recommendations for a stopover close (15 mins) to the port. Thanks

A few years ago we parked up just before you go through the checkin and intended to stay the night but in the end paid a few pounds and took the night ferry instead. But you can park up overnight.

We stayed here overnight if this is close enough. The Museum is well worth a visit.

We found that the problem with parking up for the next mornings ship is that you can see the one that leaves that night. You then think that you could be on it and home in the morning, cost us £40 for the privilege though.

Agree with @Mikeco we have just changed ours. We had intended to take the 8.30am crossing after staying overnight on the port. Previously we have stayed in the Aire next to the port but decided this time we would stay up and use the port after last ferry left. Then I started thinking the same, if we are there anyway why don’t we get on it. So it’s just cost us an upgrade fee plus a more expensive cabin as none of the cheaper ones left. Will let you know if it was worth it. When we arrived we found a nice Aire in a small town, Grainville-Langannerie just south of Caen so handy for an overnight stop before or after ferry. We have used the Portsmouth - Caen route for a few years now, this is the first year that when we arrived in October at the start of our holiday we saw a large number of “ illegals” looking to cross the Channel. The town of Ouistreham is well worth a look round plus the canal and Pegasus Bridge, a lovely area.

We are the same as Fidget, it’s only a short drive to the aire at Hermanville, it’s much quieter than staying by the port, free and you can fill and empty there as well ( depending if you are arriving for leaving).

The Boulangerie is very nice too,.

Although we've never done it (don't use ferries but have visited the town) it is fine to overnight there. You just park in one of the lanes before check-in after the last ferry has gone.

We've used the Hermanville aire several times. A couple of years ago a fire destroyed the community centre behind which is the aire (somebody had a barbecue under the canopy at the back and it got a bit out of hand!), taking out the service point. I should think it's been replaced by now. And yes the boulangerie is very "more-ish".

The barrier at the Oustriham aire would only accept Carte Bleu - you just need to find someone who will use their card and give them the cash.

We were at Hermanville last June 6th, when we heard bagpipes, I investigated & found it was coming from a military cemetery a couple of hundred yards behind the aire,
The villagers had turn out as a mark of respect
& there was a small continent of british army there , & the children of the village placed flowers on all of the graves ,lovely ceremony.

Thanks for your suggestions. We’ve just been past the ferry port and there are a large numbers of migrants wandering around the streets and car parks. Consequently we have decided to hole up at the aire at Hermanvile sur Mer which is very pleasant and quiet. Just need to set a double alarm clock for the morning!

We have just returned from France via Caen and were booked on the morning ferry. We arrived the day before sailing intending to stay on the campsite but it was closed until Easter. We then went to the car park opposite the Aires where we have stayed overnight previously. We soon noticed a few marauding groups of migrants, one of which were paying particular interest in our van. This worried us somewhat and we decided to go and ask at the Port if we could stay there. Permission was given to park on the chevrons by the check in kiosk until the last boat left at 11.00pm then to go inside the gates. We took advantage of this but at around 7pm the Gendarmerie who were checking vehicles came haring towards us and chased of a couple of migrants who had crept up to the back of our van and were tring the locker, thankfully locked. They then told us it was unsafe to stop there even though it was only 6m from the check in. They did say we could park inside which we did but with the Mrs a bit uptight we decided to get the night boat instead. So the moral of the story is that it is not safe to park overnight around the port area whilst the migrant problem persists. You have been warned!!

Ah yes, Busby, but how much is the fine for importing migrants if you get caught. Not to mention losing your Motorhome!! They all smile & wave nicely of course, so do the girls at the side of the road in Spain. Ha Ha

I am lucky as there is only one place for someone to stow away on my van,,on the bike rack and that takes no checking..Seriously though with any motorhome it only should take you a couple of minutes to do a security check,,,,As for the Girls in Spain its no good me waving back because her indoors keeps a beady eye on me,,,BUSBY:D2:D2
