Im in a mood for asking questions. Has anyone taken their motorhome on the Stromness ferry to the mainland of the Orkney Islands?. The run to Perth for us is the same as the chunnell, the run to Thurso another 210 miles ish.
We have done the Outer Hebrides and that was great so just fancy this.

We are planning a 10 day tour in May so look forward to any input on this one. Had a brief browse of ferry fares, £180 ish return for 6 - 8 metre MH above 2.4m high with 2 adults.

Many thanks for starting it Phil

Hi Stewart,

Have come to same price conclusion. No shortage of sites on http://www.ukcampsites.co.uk and one of my challenges is to get ever further North, just for the hell of it.

Aberdeen/Shetland is not out of the question but for a week its unlikely.

Hi
We have used the Scrabster-Stromness ferry many years ago and more recently (2005) the Giles Bay - St Margaret Hope (Pentland Ferries) route.
Pentland ferries have updated their boat since then but still appear to have a lower fare.
Travelling was easy on the Island and if you are interested in history, plenty to visit. Only one issue, that it is down to luck, will the wind stop blowing on more that one day a week.

Stromness camp site was (probably still is) very nice but others that have been more recently will be able to give more up todate info.

Hope you find it as interesting a place as we did.

Is there a best time to go and are the midges bad there too?

Thanks
