Hi,

On my last MOT the chap said that i would need to replace the orange indicator bulbs for the next MOT,

My question is, I purchased some bulbs from either Aldi or Lidl a few months ago that were supposed to be suitable replacements they are made by "Tesla" number PY21W and i haven't tried them yet, but they don't appear to be orange they seem like the glass has a look of oil on water, the light reflects off the bulb, i think they are supposed to change to orange when the power is applied but its quite difficult to replace the bulbs so i would like some advice before i go ahead ?

Has anyone any knowledge of these type of bulb and do you know if they will be acceptable for the MOT as i am trying to book it in for the weekend

Thanks for any advice

Hi,
Did he say why the orange bulbs had to be replaced?
I assume it passed last year and I would be tempted to leave them in and see how the MOT goes. Most MOT centres allow a few days for a retest so they could be replaced if necessary.
I don't know anything about the bulbs that you have bought but no doubt someone will be along shortly who does.
Good luck
Sandy

The indicator bulbs on a car we had a few years ago needed to be changed to pass the MoT. Apparently the orange coating wears off after a certain length of time for some reason.

Like Sandy, I'm afraid I know nothing about the Aldi bulbs.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions, I have just been reading the section in english on the side of the box and it says

"Designer indicator lamp for vehicles with clear light assembly covers, ,,White" is off, ,, Yellow" is on. Can be used as replacement for coloured lamps. Approved for use throughout Europe. No more peeling of the yellow coating."
Well thats what the manufacturer says but will the MOT person feel the same ?? anyone know

The MOT testers are governed by a set of rules and standards and cannot/shouldn't pass their own judgement on items in the test.
If the manufacturer says they will pass the test and they are orange, I would have a good argument with the tester and then use the MOT appeal system.
Good luck

Some MOT Testers seem very finnicky regarding the "orangeness" of the indicators.

I had to replace a bulb a couple of years ago because the coating had faded.

Fair cop. Not expensive.

Just a bit tricky to get to.
