N00b!
Hi friends 2 weeks ago I thought my plan was to get a 584, but since I've seen 544 and even a 564 - edit - even a 574!!!

I am honestly lost now and not sure if I can tell the dff between them al, they are all looking alike - with same features..

Can someone with some experience help a n00b out?

Thx

Budget will be 10-15k - don't really care about age as long it's got enough space, as I'm 6'4'' - [ie will above cab seeping area be wide enough]

Thx all

Not sure.

We have a B644. But then, B644's vary .

Its a Rear, low bed over a large boot (rather than high bed with garage under bed) - 2 Berths
Mid Pullman Style Dinette - Becomes 2 Berths - Kitchen Opposite
Front drop down bed - 2 further Berths.
Habitation Entrance just rear of Driver (UK) or Passenger (LHD)

We have now had two B544’s the first one on a 03 plate and a new one we bought in 2016.
Both with much the same layout of a double drop down bed and convertible sofa for third berth.
On the earlier version we removed the large fixed table and I did a simple mod so both sofas could be converted giving a choice of sleeping.
We find with the two long sofas of the B544 and swivel front seats there is stacks of feet up lounging space and seating for up to 8 if needed.
Both with care could be loaded to stay within 3500kg which I needed although both were originally plated at 3850kg.
Hard to find a better euro van for seating space, love it 👍

BTW ,seeing the floor plans on the above post neither of B544 s were as illustrated as both had full length sofas with off centre table , not a dinette as illustrated.

Hello alittlerock w2f
We have had a Hymer 584 for the last 15 years and would not change it, it has a good amount of space for relaxing with the Captain chairs turned around very comfortable, excellent storage under the large outside locker that runs the width of the van. Just 6 meters so handy for parking. Nice separate shower.
The main difference I think between the 584 and 544 is that the 584 is a three berth and the 544 is 4 berth.
Both good vans.
Good luck with your Search and keep the questions coming.

Some great advice here . I just wanted to say , take your time and don’t rush the purchase . Imagine how you would spend your evenings , mornings etc in the motorhome and try and find a layout to match that lifestyle . We have a family of 5 so needed to make sure the layout worked for us . I was convinced we needed bunk beds but then realised that wouldn’t provide anywhere to sit and lounge about . The purchase is such an exciting part of the motorhome lifestyle . Take your time and enjoy it 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

God Damn!!!
Thank you all so very much!

So much good info to take in here, and so many good people here - truly grateful.
Expect a zillion more questions from me - as I know nothing!!!
So From what I make out from initial scan is that the 583 is a 3 as opposed to th 544 which s a 4 - maybe the last digit denotes the berth!?

Right going to drool over those floor plans so kindly posted x
🙏 Have a great day, friends.

We had a 1998 B554 and that was a 5 berth! Drop down double bed; dinette converted to a small double and the long sofa was a single - or could be used as a 4 berth by pulling out slats from the dinette and putting cushion in the middle to make a large double but meant that if you were in the drop down you wouldn't be able to get to the loo if you needed to!

We have had 3 x Mercedes Motorhomes

Eura Mobil - Mercedes 416CDi Twin Rear wheel - Almost Bullet Proof 5 cylinder 2.7 CDi Engine. Brakes never felt great, Shocking Gearbox issues (SprintShift). The only reason I sold it. Went anywhere, even in deep snow @-27c in Norway.

Frankia Low Frame Mercedes 518CDi Manual. No end of trouble from Day one. Nice smooth engine when it went. I bought it 17 months old. Shocking Main Dealer service - Enza Trafford Park, now Roanza, soon to be something else.

La Strada Mercedes 318CDi 5G-Tronic Auto. Our only ever Brand new one.. Had to get Cruise control fitted, same as the Frankia above. And for the second time, Mercedes forgot to program it. Was fine for 12 months. Developed a strange vibration after having a tow bar fitted. Never really did what it said on the tin. Sold for other ventures.

So now onto our Fiat Hymer. I got it for a great price, rescuing it from Spain. LHD Manual 2.8 itdi Iveco Engine.

I thought it would be an issues with front wheel drive. This one is not. Along with the usual passengers, a lot of weight is up front over the drive wheels. Gas Bottles, Diesel Tank. Water Tank, 3 Batteries etc. Grip with Michelin Alpin Winter tyres is superb.

Feels more stable than any of the rocky Mercedes due to the track.
Has never failed to start
Great engine

I don't have Cruise Control
We don't have Airbags
I dont have ESP/ASR
We don't have can A/C but I have a remedy.

The only one of the above I would swap it for and I nearly bought it back. Would be the Eura Mobil. The only thing that stopped me, SprintShift.

Thx TeeMyob!

Great in depth info. Am guessing the mercs are pricier than the fiat vans.

Yes, Mercedes are dearer. Not always for the right reasons.

My Chassis of Choice as per one of my recent postings elsewhere on here, would be 313/16CDi, 416CDi or for larger Motorhomes, 616CDi. But only with the 5G-Tronic Auto Gearbox or Manual if that suits the driver.

Mercedes 2001-2006 with 5G-Tronic are quite rare in the UK and on The Continent. US and Canada Never got the SprintShift AFAIK.

616CDi's With Autobox have a limited tow capacity!

There is no code to decipher Hymer model numbers I'm afraid, apart from B = Fiat and S= Merc.

There is a Classic Hymer Facebook Group that has a wealth of information and knowledgeable posters on models / issues / fixes / parts sourcing etc. so well worth joining.

There is also the Hymermarket on FB for selling and buying and finally Classic Hymers Technical.

I think you may have got this round the wrong way - the 544 is 3 berth - was with our 2012 version anyhow.

Exactly don’t be lead by merc v fiat related to the car market. 20 times more opportunities to service a Fiat worldwide than a merc. There is quite a premium for servicing/parts as well. I love our Fiat.

There are obviously different ones as our 584 is definitely a 3 berth, and a friends 544 is 4 berth so obviously no hard and fast rule.

Hiya . In Germany at mo but we have a B544 it is a 3 berth drop down bed and single bed at side of table. Our last van was a Hymer C 514 which we loved but it was old ( small engine Italian tour long slow story) it had 4 belted seats in back drop down bed grandkids heaven ( windows on sides of bed for shouting out...) They are all different I think good luck with the search it is great looking at vans xxx
