Going away for the winter, do you leave the doors in the house open or closed, if left closed the rear on the North may get very cold , might freeze or do we leave them closed, better security !

I don't think I ever shit the internal doors of the house except the bathroom and that's only to keep it warm ?
Surely your boiler will kick in if it gets to freezing temps anyway as most have a frost stat.

damp stains are generally caused by lack of airflow, so internal doors open

No frost stat!

We have a PIV ( Positive Input Ventilation) system in our house. It blows clean filtered air into the house from the loft and heats it when cold, so we leave all our doors open most of the time especially if we are away.
Most of the house is open plan anyway
and the system stops condensation forming in the house, important for the humid Brittany area.
So, yes, doors open

what about the time clock
Permanently ON. During an average UK Winter heating will stay off most of the time at 8 degrees but will kick in for while during the early hours on frosty days. I leave my loft hatch open too.

When the wind blows the internal doors open themselves unless latched. Probably not intended by the builders as a way of preventing damp. Good ventilation throughout. Don't mention the gas bills.

Our ch thermastat minimum is 10 degrees so that's what we leave it on, timer on all the time and doors open.

Strange way to warm your bathroom door up ??

I leave all my internal doors closed and like some of the others, the heating is left on a low setting.

I blame my fat fingers ?

heating set at 5c and it comes on about 20 times a year...one of them is when it gets serviced....we are outdoors most of the year with an open fire

Doors open?, never, my OCD would go through the roof. I'd be worrying about it all the time I was away. The last thing I do before leaving home is shut all the doors.

Never worried about it, I just abandon the house, much in the same way I live in it.

But closed may inhibit spread of fire, but if you aren't there when your smoke detector goes off, too late.

Open at least allows some air movement. Might reduce some condensation, if you have heating kept on lower temps when away, but being practical you then need to also be emptying wardrobes and all the other vulnerable non air movement spots. You really need to combat humidity sources first.

Check your home insurance.
Mine said 15 degrees or empty heating system. Left at 15 with doors shut.
Someone had to visit weekly to check home ok as well.

I wouldn't trust my boiler to kick in for frost protection if I was away for several months.

Inevitably the differential water pressure falls below the threshold at which the boiler won't fire up and shows an error message. Annoying on a cold winter morning. There's no internal leak that I can find but it has always needed repressurising slightly every 2 or 3 months.

I would have to drain down instead for peace of mind. My last 2 modern boilers have had the same reliability as a BL car from the 70s.

We aim to leave ours closed with the heating on low. Our radiators do have individual thermostats. Having said that the offspring do sometimes visit with friends whilst we’re away so our plans don’t always work! The one we ask them to be particularly fussy about is the door to the living room as we came home from hols once to find a bird had come down the chimney, it had “visited” every room in the house by the time we got back and was still alive and flying about! There is supposed to be a cover thing on it now but we don’t have a long enough ladder to climb up and check.

In the unfortunate and hopefully unlikely event there was a fire then doors closed will give more time and help ensure less damage from fire spreading.
