Onboard Wi-fi (1 Viewer)

Hi

It appears that the previous owners had some sort of onboard Wi-fi. I have attached photos of equipment and possible antennae. I have absolutely no previous experience of mobile Wi-fi so would greatly appreciate any assistance and advice on possible ways of getting things up and running again.

Someone else will see enough from your pics to recognise the parts on display but I’d need a pic of the rear of the SES box or its model # to help.
Maybe there’ll be an rj45 connector you can connect a laptop too to see configuration settings.
But it does look like van wifi of some sort ?

Looks like a long range aerial on the roof connected to a router.
I use something similar but rarely used these days as data is so cheap and more reliable.

If it is an MDM2200 it is a satellite modem.



This would have worked with a dish, either a portable one but more likely one on the roof. If it isn't there now there should be evidence where it was.

I suspect something may also be missing. What were the cables connected to originally? They don't look long enough and may have been connected to something where the small screw holes seem to be.

I would look at the Mifi route if I was you. You could use the existing hole in the roof to fit a good external antenna for the best reception although this is by no means essential.

So what it looks like your missing is a way to connect several devices to the internet that you’ve got from the satellite modem.
In the gap was a RJ45 router or a WiFi router, etc.

The SES box is a satellite modem, used to send/receive data from one of the ASTRA satellites. I presume it is connected to the satellite dish, and should auto-position if it is working correctly. The satellite dish may even have the 'quad-LNB' upgrade to allow it to receive regular satellite TV broadcasts.

The connection, via an 8-way 'RJ45' square clip-in plug, can go either direct to a laptop, or maybe to an 'Access Point' or router to share the connection between several devices.

The beer-can-sized aerial on the roof is an omnidirectional type, and could be for either GPS, cellphone or ordinary wifi, or any combination of the three. But I'd hazard a guess it's just for GPS location. Tracing the wire(s) as they come in from the roof will give you more information.

The 4G antenna fitted looks to be one of ours from the internal plate, although the roof antenna is not pictured.

We may have also supplied the Satellite Internet system directly or indirectly, in the latter years of us supplying Satellite Internet (which I'd not really recommend using or renewing in 2019) we also supplied a 4G systems and the 4G router provided WiFi from either Satellite or 4G depending on the mode set.

I'm certain that there would be no need to visit us, you have everything you need bar a router to have a functioning 4G system which would simply be a case of connecting 3 cables which we could supply if required.
