as title says dont start van on hook up i did and it blew the charger so i changed the little fuse behind cover BOOM another fuse .so replaced unit for a new one its all good now everthing doing what it should . a school boy error award for me and a lighter wallett [and a dinted pride ] but so glad its sorted .roll on the trips away

No problems with the last 3 motorhomes starting engine whilst on EHU.

I learnt that sad lesson many years ago :crying1: .

However, instead of a big metal box occupying a sizable proportion of a locker I now have a small, modern, smart-charger tucked away under a drawer in a wardrobe: every cloud has a silver lining ;) .

Not had a problem on any of our vans, it looks like a problem with your setup.

Do it regularly without any problem.

Aly1 - did it once many years ago and ended up ripping the cable out of the plug - thankfully at the van and not the bollard!! Re-wired and all was well - but talk about embarrassing!!!

No problems here, at a guess I'd say your charger was already gone.

Not had that problem with either my previous Adria or my present Hymer. Mind you once or twice my wife had to get quite agitated to stop me before I moved the length of the lead!

Have done this dozens of times, no problems at all.

Why the two different situations?
Is it down to the motorhome's built in charger type?
On EHU, our motorhome uses a 12v switchmode PSU as the charger and only tops up the Habitat battery.

edit: PSU rated to supply 13.8V

I always route the cable up over the driver side mirror as my m/h's EHU inlet socket is on the driver's side.
Never had a prob when starting with EHU connected and live.

There is no theoretical reason why it should cause a problem. I have done it by accident with no issues. However I wouldn't do it intentionally. Possible voltage surges if your protection systems are not up to scratch I guess. But just a guess.

Interesting, but this is something I always do.

EHU is on a few days before we go away..fridge on .

Then when we're ready to go I start the engine and leave it ticking over for five minutes whilst I disconnect the hook up and check lockers.

Never had a problem.
