We are looking for old railways that have been converted to cycle / walk ways. We are doing the Monsal trail in Derbyshire and hopefully the Two Tunnel Greenway circular near Bristol and Bath this year . Can any one recommend any others and also good site details nearby too if possible

Dolgellau to Barmouth, probably the most scenic in the UK, High Peak in Derbyshire is my favourite in the Peak District and if you do the funsters rally in Stratford upon Avon you have the Greenway close to the racecourse and the canal cycleway to Snitterfield.

The Peak District also has the Tissington Trail and Manifold Valley Trail, both highly recommended.
Love the Barmouth to Dolgellau Trail though and some nice sites with handy access

There is the Crab and Winkle line that runs from Canterbury to Whitstable (or the reverse of course) which you could walk from the Canterbury P+R, Canterbury CCC site or one of the Whitstable campsites. There is a good bus service for the return. It is about 8 miles, so you could do it both ways.

I have done it a few times, most recently was last Thursday in a group with 43 other people!

Whilst in the Bath area there is of course the Bristol to Bath cyclepath. You can do it one way ( nicely downhill the last few miles into Bristol if you go from Bath) and get the train back.

We stayed on a CS, Washbrook Farm at Fenny Bentley, a while back, 2-3 mile walk into Ashbourne along the Tissington Trail which was on the doorstep. Ok apart from the bikers whizzing past.

A couple I remember off the top of my head are the Camel Trail in Cornwall (Camelford to Padstow) and the Cuckoo Trail in West Sussex (can't remember the start & finishes).

Derbyshire also has the High Peak trail.
There's a nice (but short) one from Keswick to Threlkeld (less well known but picturesque).
And the longer Water Rail Trail Lincoln to Boston (second half uses some roads).

Also just remembered that part of the east end of the South Downs Way used to be a railway line. There's also a CC site right next to it....

There is the Brampton Valley Way that's starts (or finishes) in Market Harborough, South Leicestershire and finishes (or starts) in Northampton. It see along the way is the Brixworth Country Park, with tearoom and an a small stretch of rail still operating with steam trains offering shore journeys.

The campsite right on the trail, just outside Market Harborough is Waterloo Farm Leisure. http://waterloofarmleisure.co.uk/ also with tearooms.

It's very good. Enjoyed it this year. Better than Thyssington Trail.

Another good one in the area is Carsington Water. A trail right round the reservoir. Great visitors centre. Campsite a mile away.

Cuckoo trail goes from Heathfield to Eastbourne in East sussex. Forest Way goes from East Grinstead (West Sussex) to Groombridge (East Sussex) via Hartfield the home of Winnie the Pooh.

Both tracks can be linked with some quiet rural roads and is part of the London to Paris Avenue Verte (Green Route) via the Newhaven to Dieppe Ferry.

Does part of that run tween Barnstaple and Bideford?

Yes Barnstaple to Bideford is about 9 miles, stop at Fremington quay for a cuppa and slice of cake, or more, stop again at instow for a ice cream, at Bideford there is a old railway carriage as a cafe. You can go on from Bideford to Torrington and further. The other way from Barnstaple you an go to Braunton, stopping at the Braunton inn, a big pub beside the estuary and then on to Ilfracombe.

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
There's a nice railway walk out of Keswick but I cant remember how far along towards Penrith it takes you & as for sites, take your pick. The C&CC site in Keswick has stunning scenery but the least friendly wardens I'd ever had the misfortune to meet.

Most of the Devon coast to coast is on old railway trails. Ilfracombe to Plymouth. It can be split into three days and is a great ride, not too difficult either.
