I had PVCs for years, then bought a Hymer. First time on the road I nearly did something like that. The mirror was more curved, and the car behind was much nearer than I thought. I got away with a long blast of the horn. Didn't actually make contact. Lesson definitely learnt.

That's where rear view cameras help immensely don't pull in until I can see both headlights
